The Food Industry’s Hidden Crisis Is Now Impossible to Ignore

UK researchers have discovered a way to enhance our coexistence with other living beings on Earth.

Dedicating about 20% of farmland to rewilding and sustainable practices could help combat biodiversity loss while keeping grocery stores stocked, according to experts at the UK Center for Ecology & Hydrology.

This win-win scenario is crucial, as 44% of the world’s land is used for agriculture, primarily for livestock, according to Our World in Data.

“Reversing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation is vital for nature and global food security. There is no single solution for restoring nature, and integrating rewilding into agricultural landscapes remains unclear,” said the study author in a news release.

Biodiversity is essential for food, water, medicine, and climate stability, yet humans have altered about 70% of the planet’s ice-free land, harming crucial ecosystems.

The United Nations reports that habitat loss and species extinction are serious consequences. Experts recommend that farmers set aside 20% of land next to fields for trees and native plants to help reverse this damage.

Ponds, small forest islands, and hedgerows are important landscape features. Providing bird-friendly nesting sites and perches would benefit our feathered friends. The plan aims to restore 30% of degraded land, according to the report.

Reducing fertilizer and pesticide use can reduce runoff into waterways. Planting wildflower rows creates habitats for pollinators, which are vital for about 35% of our food supply.

Despite their importance, bee populations are declining. Natural fertilizers, hydrogels that reduce runoff, and laser weeders can replace traditional products that cause collateral damage.

The U.K. strategy provides benefits such as better soil protection, natural pest control, increased pollination, and stronger crops, while also saving money on fertilizers and treatments. “Our approach transcends the land sparing versus land sharing debate.”

We believe rewilding can enhance agricultural landscapes and is vital for sustainable long-term food production for people and the planet.

The Center team acknowledged that the benefits of its plan would vary with the farm’s size and location. Areas that are already biodiverse wouldn’t experience as much of an impact.

The experts also encouraged governments to incentivize the action plan with tax breaks. “Combining rewilding methods with agriculture can produce diverse, resilient, and interconnected agroecological landscapes,” said the study’s lead author.
