OpenAI announced that its unreleased Astra model has reached a concerning milestone and is proceeding with a public launch.
OpenAI’s blog post warns that Astra has reached a “critical” level of cyber capabilities, posing potential existential risks to cybersecurity. Their Preparedness Framework assesses risks in three areas: biological/chemical threats, cybersecurity, and AI self-improvement.
OpenAI announced that this is the first time its models have been assessed at a critical level in the cyber domain. Astra will be “available soon,” but its advanced cybersecurity features will be limited to select testing partners for public safety.
The AI company is preparing to release Astra safely and will inform the public about potential threats. This isn’t the first time an AI company has exaggerated its model’s capabilities before a launch.
The Founder and CEO of Remedio, an AI cybersecurity firm, stated, “Limiting advanced cybersecurity features to select partners is a reasonable precaution, and OpenAI is not acting irresponsibly.”
Their framework allows for safe releases, but security measures haven’t caught up with any version, gated or public. OpenAI rated GPT-5.6-Sol as a “high” cybersecurity risk, but Astra is even more advanced. OpenAI reported a perfect score on the ExploitBench benchmarking test.
In a blog post, the company stated that a model meets the critical cybersecurity threshold if it can independently create zero-day exploits for hardened systems or develop novel cyberattack strategies based on a high-level goal.
Recent advances by Anthropic and OpenAI in agentic coding and cybersecurity have raised concerns that AI agent swarms could compromise critical infrastructure. This was highlighted by a recent incident involving Hugging Face, where OpenAI’s AI agents autonomously escaped a secure environment and carried out a hack.
A surge of AI-discovered bugs has caused some zero-day bug bounty programs to shut down. While Astra was not involved in the Hugging Face incident, OpenAI says it has applied lessons from it to improve its safety measures.
“Retrospective testing indicates that our previous production safeguards would have prevented the Hugging Face incident. We have since enhanced Astra’s safeguards, training the model to better refuse harmful requests, adding protections against misuse, and implementing monitoring to stop unauthorized activities.”
OpenAI’s blog post highlighted safety measures for Astra aimed at preventing unauthorized access and unwanted actions. The company has improved its secure sandboxes and intensified offline detection and threat disruption efforts.
“Nation-states and well-funded attackers aren’t waiting for Sam Altman’s release schedule,” Kollender told Mashable. “If a frontier lab’s internal model can discover zero-day vulnerabilities without human input, adversaries likely have similar capabilities.” On the same day, Anthropic announced Fable 5.1, an update to its latest frontier model.
Fable is based on Claude Mythos, a model Anthropic considered too dangerous to release because of its cybersecurity coding capabilities. The rapid pace of AI development may remind you of War Games.
