An Anthropic researcher is leaving the AI industry over concerns that labs are racing to develop uncontrollable systems, highlighting growing safety issues among leading companies.
A researcher specializing in training AI models announced that he is leaving his company over concerns about the industry’s rush to create self-improving AI systems, fearing they could become uncontrollable and threaten humanity.
The 27-year-old Brit, a former mathematics student, observed that his industry colleagues often use terms like “crunch time” and “endgame” to describe the path to self-improving models.
“We’re heading toward extreme scenarios where things could be out of control by the end of next year,” he said, noting that safety trade-offs are inevitable as companies compete with each other and new Chinese competitors.
Anthropic did not comment on the departure. The Chief Executive and company leaders have expressed concerns about rogue AI models, urging the industry to slow down. He said he left OpenAI for Anthropic because of its focus on model safety.
He acknowledges Anthropic’s sincere safety efforts but now believes that no company can safely develop artificial general intelligence without government intervention or a coordinated industry slowdown.
Recent hacks by models from OpenAI and Anthropic have shown that AI systems can develop harmful goals and hide them from humans. A 27-year-old British man fears that as these systems improve on their own, they may eventually refuse commands.
His departure is not the first time an Anthropic employee has left over AI safety concerns. Earlier this year, a safety researcher left to pursue poetry, warning that “the world is in peril.”
Recently, several researchers have left OpenAI and other companies due to shared concerns. Anthropic has grown into one of the largest AI platforms by prioritizing responsible AI development. Industry leaders warn that recent cyberattacks signal potential threats. Last week, OpenAI claimed its latest model marks a significant advancement in artificial general intelligence.
“Some significant issues may arise in cybersecurity if immediate actions are not taken,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed a group of 20 officials last week at a summit in North Carolina.
“This is a time that requires extreme caution. I am worried that no one is prepared for the consequences of the ongoing rapid increase in machine intelligence,” wrote OpenAI’s chief scientist in a blog post on Sunday. He advocated a coordinated industry slowdown and government intervention.
All three researchers joined more than 1,000 AI professionals who signed a statement urging global coordination to create a system that can pause AI development if needed to manage self-improving models.
No federal regulations govern AI, and the Trump administration favors a light-touch approach to maximize its economic benefits. Critics warn this could lead to significant cyberattacks and other dangers.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Greg Casar (D-Texas) introduced legislation last week to permanently ban superintelligence and pause AI model development until new regulations are established.
His departure coincides with Anthropic’s plans for a massive initial public offering (IPO), aiming for a $2 trillion valuation while emphasizing responsible technology development to attract investors.
Company leaders have often clashed with the Trump administration and other executives over AI safety practices. Anthropic uses an employee Slack channel to discuss its model’s powerful capabilities, highlighting the influence AI companies have on the industry.
“It’s quite astonishing that this must occur on the MacBooks of some engineers in San Francisco instead of a fortified bunker in the desert, like where they conducted the Manhattan Project,” he said.
