The individual known as the ‘godfather of AI’ has issued a warning about powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent British-Canadian computer scientist, is renowned for his groundbreaking work on artificial neural networks. He has issued a stark warning: if artificial intelligence achieves superintelligence, it poses a serious risk that could lead to human extinction.
Superintelligence is the point at which an artificial system exceeds the capabilities of any individual, organization, or nation. Dr. Hinton firmly stated, “It would be irresponsible to pursue the development of superintelligence now, as there is no scientific consensus on whether it can be created safely and managed effectively.”
‘Losing control over AI that surpasses human intelligence could be catastrophic and might even result in human extinction,’ Dr. Hinton commented. He made his remarks alongside a bill drafted by ControlAI and proposed by a Labor MP.
The UK Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill is set to be presented to Parliament tomorrow, marking a crucial step in safeguarding our future by banning the development of superintelligent AI in the UK. This initiative has garnered the support of over 135 cross-party parliamentarians, demonstrating a strong, united front for responsible AI governance.
“Nobel Prize winners, AI scientists, and CEOs from leading AI companies believe that addressing the extinction risk from AI should be a global priority,” ControlAI announced. “Specialized AIs focused on science and medicine are vital for growth, innovation, and public service improvement.”
Superintelligent AI systems threaten both national and global security. The UK has a critical opportunity to maximize AI’s benefits while minimizing its risks by swiftly implementing binding regulations on the most powerful AI systems.
Key AI figures, like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have shifted from supporting more regulation to opposing “overregulation.” In a Senate hearing last May, he stated that EU-like regulations would be “disastrous.”
Mr. Altman stated, “We need the space to innovate and act quickly.” Similarly, at a major privacy conference the previous month, he mentioned that it is impossible to establish AI safeguards before problems arise. However, Dr. Hinton contends that this mindset could potentially lead to humanity’s total annihilation.
During a speech last year, he stated, “If we can’t find a solution for how we can coexist when they become much smarter and more powerful than us, we’ll be in trouble. We need a counter-pressure to the tech advocates who argue that there should be no regulations on AI.”
