Many people have been quarantined in Siberia after a laboratory worker died from suspected plague, according to reports.
An employee at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov was exposed to bacteria after accidentally breaking a test tube while collecting samples, according to the Kyiv Independent.
While working with live biological material in the laboratory, she accidentally smashed a test tube containing a dangerous bacterium.
Two days later, Shipilova’s condition suddenly worsened. Doctors rushed her to Shelekhov district hospital. At first, doctors, unaware of what had happened, suspected a severe case of coronavirus and admitted her to a specialized COVID unit.
However, the rapid deterioration and the clinical picture forced them to carry out rapid tests for highly dangerous infections. The patient was put on a ventilator, but her life could not be saved.
She was hospitalized on September 29 with severe pneumonia of “unknown origin” and later died on a ventilator. Lyudi Baikal reported that several hospitals in Irkutsk have closed for a three-week quarantine. After the incident, officials restricted information. In the first 24 hours, Irkutsk authorities and Governor Igor Kobzev avoided the term “plague.”
On October 2, Kobzev called it “a particularly dangerous infection” and said the situation was “under strict control.” The next day, Baikalsk authorities warned residents not to travel to Shelekhov because of the plague, but quickly deleted the post.
The head of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, addressed the recent situation surrounding a woman’s death. He stated unequivocally that her death was connected to a plague infection, referencing reports from Rospotrebnadzor and the republican government. However, he later revised his statement to a more cautious tone.
This lack of clarity has undeniably fueled panic on social media platforms in Irkutsk and the surrounding regions. At least 197 individuals suspected of having direct or indirect contact with the technician have been placed under medical isolation, according to the newspaper. More than 100 of these individuals are currently being monitored in hospital wards.
Local authorities have enforced a strict quarantine in the district, targeting the Shelekhov District Hospital, a maternity facility, and a local aluminum plant. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev urged residents to remain calm as an anti-epidemic commission investigates a suspected case of a dangerous infection.
“Kobzev’s public statement did not mention the worker’s death, but he confirmed that all close contacts are asymptomatic and have tested negative. Russian law enforcement has begun a criminal investigation into workplace health and safety violations concerning the incident.”
Alexey Tsydenov, head of the neighboring Republic of Buryatia, initially claimed that a woman had died from the plague but later changed his statement to say she “may have” been infected. The incident raised concerns about pneumonic plague, a variant caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, because the facility specializes in dangerous pathogens.
Unlike bubonic and septicemic plagues, which are transmitted to humans mainly through flea bites or contact with infected animals, pneumonic plague poses a far greater threat. It directly attacks the lungs and can spread rapidly from person to person through airborne respiratory droplets.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pneumonic plague patients typically develop fever, headaches, weakness, and severe respiratory distress, including shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, and watery or blood-tinged mucus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the disease has a high mortality rate if untreated, but it can be managed effectively with early antibiotics and proper infection control. A U.S. State Department spokesperson noted a possible death from the disease in Russia.
“We are closely monitoring the situation with the CDC and our interagency partners,” the spokesperson said. “Many details have yet to be confirmed. We urge Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly.”
