A warning from a former Anthropic researcher highlights the risks of “superintelligence” — technology that could surpass human cognitive abilities.
In a social media thread about his resignation, a researcher claimed that Anthropic and OpenAI are “gambling with our lives” by pursuing superintelligence. He noted on X that there is over a 10% chance AI “could kill all humans” in the next decade.
The warnings highlight concerns about superintelligence, companies’ readiness to develop it, and the potential risks to jobs, national security, and humanity.
Superintelligence is artificial intelligence that can greatly exceed human performance in nearly all cognitive tasks. A petition from the Future of Life Institute seeks to halt its development and has been signed by prominent figures, including the “Godfather of AI.”
“Imagine an AI or a powerful group of AIs that is smarter than all 8 billion people on Earth,” said a professor at MIT specializing in AI research. “That would certainly qualify.”
Researchers worry that a few companies could control superintelligent AIs, giving them immense power and increasing the risk of misuse. The idea that AI might surpass human intelligence is not new.
A British mathematician discussed the concept of an “ultraintelligent machine” in the 1960s, defining it as one that could outstrip any human’s intellectual capabilities. AI company executives have also acknowledged the technology’s risks and its potential dangers to humanity.
“We are nearing a point where we could be outsmarted,” he said. “Labs creating advanced AI are open about their goals,” stated the president of the Center for AI Safety and a former xAI employee. “They aim to develop AI that automates research, allowing each AI to quickly improve itself.”
Recursive self-improvement (RSI) could lead to significant advances but also increases the risk of disasters like pandemics, cyberattacks that disrupt essential services, or losing control of rogue AI systems. Current systems still allow for human oversight, but this may not last.
Experts warn that superintelligent AI poses a significant threat because control will become increasingly difficult. A former OpenAI researcher, now leading the AI Futures Project, noted, “They struggle to align their AIs today, and future AIs will be even smarter and harder to understand.”
“Even if successful, they will create an unprecedented concentration of power—new superintelligences that serve a small group of individuals. This situation is insane and cannot continue. With AI advancing rapidly, Tegmark warns that humans risk losing control over the technology.”
“Allowing an unrestricted race to develop superintelligent robots significantly increases the likelihood of losing control in the coming decades,” he stated. “Major AI leaders admit they don’t fully understand the technology, and it’s irresponsible for society to let them advance these products further.”
