Body-Repairing Nanorobots Are Now Real

Neurosurgeons will soon utilize tiny robots within human bodies to assist in life-saving surgeries. Microscopic nanorobots, smaller than a blood cell, have been effectively employed in rabbits to deliver medication to blood vessels damaged by aneurysms.

This groundbreaking scientific discovery will render the stents and coils used in human brains obsolete. An aneurysm occurs when the wall of an artery weakens and can no longer withstand the rapid flow of blood it carries.

The blood exerts pressure on the weak spot, bulging the artery. Eventually, the artery wall ruptures, leading to severe brain damage or death.

The nanorobots utilized in the rabbits delivered drugs directly to the aneurysm, blocking blood flow to the weakened area and preventing it from bursting. These tiny life-saving devices measure only 295 nanometers in diameter, making them three times smaller than the most common forms of bacteria.

The nanorobot utilizes heat-seeking technology to locate the aneurysm, which remains in place until its coating melts and releases the medication. The medication, thrombin, reacts with the blood cells to induce clotting, preventing the artery walls from bursting.

Although the process has not yet been tested in humans, researchers have outlined the method medical providers will use to deploy the nanorobots in the September edition of the medical journal Small.

After locating the aneurysm, a cardiovascular surgeon will use a microcatheter to release nanobots into the patient’s bloodstream near the aneurysm, reducing the need to go deep into the brain.

Researchers needed to confirm the compatibility of nanorobot technology with human cells before testing it on humans. A recent study showed that the material is biocompatible after testing with human cells. Rabbits tested with the nanorobot technology are reported to be healthy.

After two weeks, the treatment was given to three rabbits. The clots blocking the aneurysms were stable, and researchers are monitoring to ensure the blood supply remains cut off from the damaged blood vessels.

In the future, researchers will need to achieve success with nanorobots in larger subjects before considering human test subjects. Conducting longer, more in-depth studies will be necessary, but it could lead to a significant and positive change in how medicine treats deadly brain aneurysms.
