Something Big Is Happening in America’s Skies

America’s command of its nuclear forces during a crisis is undergoing critical testing in large-scale military drills.

A Tuesday statement confirmed that the US Strategic Command is conducting its annual Global Thunder 27 exercise. Officials warned that more bombers and support aircraft may be in the sky as the operation tests military decision-making and communication capabilities.

The drills ensure that America’s nuclear forces are ready and secure, capable of deterring attacks. Recently, flight data tracked B-52 bombers leaving Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and E-6B Mercury aircraft operating over the U.S.

The E-6Bs, known as “doomsday planes,” serve as mobile command centers, keeping national leaders connected to U.S. nuclear forces. Recent aviation notices indicate temporary airspace reservations over parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Florida, likely linked to the Global Thunder exercise.

Officials emphasized that Global Thunder is an annual exercise, not a reaction to current events. Global Thunder 27 started on October 22 and will last about 10 days. Reports of military aircraft over America surfaced only recently, even though the drills have been underway for several days.

At least five doomsday planes were spotted Tuesday afternoon, with another one leaving Oklahoma and heading northwest. Flight tracking showed B-52 bombers flying north from Minot, North Dakota, into Canada and taking looping routes over Louisiana and Mississippi.

A B-1B Lancer bomber was tracked over western Texas. America’s nuclear forces consist of three branches known as the nuclear triad: land-based missiles, ballistic missile submarines, and long-range bombers. The land-based component features Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles housed in underground silos.

Submarines carry nuclear-armed Trident II missiles, while B-52 and B-2 bombers provide airborne support. Together, these forces offer national leaders various options for retaliation, ensuring the ability to respond even if part of the nuclear arsenal is targeted.

The E-6B, based on the Boeing 707, carries specialized communications technology to keep national leaders in contact with nuclear forces, including long trailing-wire antennas for communication with ballistic missile submarines.

The aircraft features an airborne launch control system for launching America’s land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. In contrast, the B-1B Lancer is exclusively for conventional weapons, having completed its transition away from a nuclear mission in 2011.

The flight maps show aircraft movements, but they don’t specify weapons loads or confirm every aircraft in Global Thunder. Aviation notices designate specific airspace blocks for defined periods, allowing controllers to separate planned activities from other aircraft.

The nuclear exercise is linked to an Atlantic reservation called ‘Global Thunder (Oak Bravo),’ scheduled from 10 AM Eastern on Tuesday, October 27, to 11 PM on Friday, October 30.

Airspace over the Atlantic, Pacific, and Florida has been reserved, with a caution warning for pilots. Minot Air Force Base has extended operating hours, while activities at Whiteman Air Force Base are limited to official business. These notices are not directly related to Global Thunder.
