When the stock market declines and investors worry about inflation, gold prices tend to rise.
Gold has consistently retained its value and appreciated over time, making it a reliable long-term investment. Investors can buy physical gold, gold ETFs, or gold mining stocks as safe-haven assets.
Gold is a safe-haven investment that maintains or increases in value during economic uncertainty. Unlike stocks, its price isn’t tied to any country or company, making it a valuable asset for centuries.
During economic volatility, like recessions or high inflation, investors often turn to gold. Its price has historically increased, rising from $1,250 per ounce in 2016 to over $4,000 per ounce by June 2026, more than tripling in a decade.
Safe-haven investments usually maintain their value or appreciate during economic downturns. Common options include gold, government bonds, and cash accounts, aiming to preserve value rather than generate high returns.
Safe-haven investments protect against market downturns and rising inflation, helping preserve wealth. While not entirely risk-free, they generally offer more stability than other investment options.
Gold is considered a safe-haven investment due to its limited supply, diverse uses, and strong historical performance. Approximately 220,000 tonnes of gold have been mined, with about 54,000 tonnes remaining in unmined reserves. This scarcity gives gold intrinsic value and distinguishes it from other assets.
Gold cannot be printed like currency, which helps it retain value better than cash. Unlike stocks or bonds tied to specific entities, gold is valued across cultures. This makes it particularly appealing during geopolitical crises and a reliable way to preserve wealth.
Gold has consistently increased in value despite wars, economic recessions, and revolutions. For example, during the Great Depression from 1929 to 1939, while the stock market faltered, gold’s price rose from $20.63 to $34.42—a 67% increase. This illustrates that gold serves as a reliable safe-haven investment, preserving its value during instability.
Over the past 50 years, gold has faced significant challenges, particularly during the Great Inflation from 1965 to 1982, when inflation rates peaked above 14% in 1980. To protect their wealth, investors turned to gold, driving demand higher. Consequently, gold’s price rose from $35.12 per ounce in 1965 to $376 in 1982, resulting in substantial profits for investors.
From 2007 to 2009, the U.S. economy was in a deep recession, marked by falling home values, a declining stock market, and rising unemployment. During this time, gold proved resilient, increasing from $695.39 in 2007 to $972.35 in 2009—an increase of nearly $300 per ounce.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant stock market drop, which fell about 35% from February to March 2020. In contrast, gold proved to be more resilient, dipping slightly from $1,687 to $1,472 per ounce before quickly recovering. By the end of 2020, gold was priced nearly at $1,800 per ounce. As of 2026, inflation remains a major concern for investors.
As of June 2026, the inflation rate was 4.25%, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, which led more investors to gold and drove its price up. While gold is considered a safe-haven investment, how does it compare to U.S. Treasury securities and bonds? Here’s a brief comparison.
U.S. Treasury securities, issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, are backed by the government’s full faith and credit. One notable safe-haven asset is Series I savings bonds, which earn interest but may not match gold’s growth and are valid for up to 30 years. Investment-grade bonds are less volatile than stocks and can provide regular income, unlike gold.
When interest rates fall and markets are stable, bonds may outperform gold. However, gold tends to retain its value better during high inflation. Many investors turn to gold during stock market declines, viewing it as a stable investment that offers security when confidence in the stock market wanes.
1 Timothy 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
1 Timothy 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
