A Financial Doomsday Warning? Pulling Gold Out of America

The traditional alliances between global powers are increasingly being tested today.

Global conflicts, such as those between Russia and Ukraine and involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, have prompted governments to publicly declare their loyalties, despite the conflicts being unpopular domestically and distant from their borders.

Before considering President Trump’s tariff agenda and the resulting trade conflicts, it’s clear why central banks worldwide are quietly accumulating gold, a safe-haven asset. They seem reluctant to disclose where they are storing it.

Goldman Sachs reported that central banks globally bought 79 tonnes of gold in August, over four times the pre-2022 average of 17 tonnes. On a seasonally adjusted three-month basis, purchases are averaging 85 tonnes per month.

China accounted for about 25 tonnes of gold demand in August, according to Goldman. While it was the largest identifiable buyer, other economies may be buying more, though that seems unlikely. Goldman also notes that the People’s Bank of China and other emerging markets are not buying gold at an alarming rate.

Goldman said China is currently underweight in gold relative to its potential long-term allocation. However, the reasons for diversifying away from G7 reserve currencies, particularly the U.S. dollar, are expected to persist.

Central banks in the domestic market have mostly remained inactive during the past four years’ buying spree, according to Goldman. This is because they already possess significant gold reserves due to historical factors.

For domestic economies, the debate has shifted from gold volume to where it is stored. This highlights broader concerns regarding reserve security and trust between countries.

In September, the Dutch central bank decisively revealed that it had reallocated 86 tons of gold from New York and Ottawa to London over the past six months. This strategic move improves its readiness to handle serious crises and strengthens its financial resilience.

De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) has decided to act in response to rising geopolitical tensions. This strategic move aims to enhance the tradability of Dutch gold, ensuring it remains a valuable asset in uncertain times.

“Gold at the Bank of England in London is considered the most tradable in the world, making it the fastest option for DNB in a crisis. In comparison, gold stored in New York and Ottawa is less easily deployable.”

In March, the Banque de France, France’s central bank, sold 129 tons of gold—5% of its total holdings—in New York and purchased gold in Europe. Unlike the Norges Bank, the Banque de France said it wanted to ensure its gold met a purity of over 99.99%, as U.S. stocks fell below that standard.

Central bank gold holdings at the New York Fed fell by 40 tonnes in August, while the Bank of England’s holdings rose by 46 tonnes. A Goldman survey found that 12% of central banks in 2026 declined to confirm their gold storage locations, compared to 10% last year.

In 2026, central banks significantly diversified their overseas storage, with 10% reporting it, up from 2% the previous year. Additionally, this year, they were more likely to increase domestic storage at a rate of 9%, up from 5% in 2025.

The trend is poised to continue: 18% of central banks remain unwilling to reveal their gold storage plans for the coming year, while 9% are positioning themselves for further diversification. This shift in approach could reshape market dynamics.
