The Dutch central bank has moved about $11.6 billion in gold from the U.S. and Canada amid rising geopolitical unrest, prompting greater crisis preparedness in Europe.
Between March and August, De Nederlandsche Bank transferred 86 metric tonnes of bullion from New York and Ottawa to London, a strategic move that ensures swift gold trading during emergencies when every moment counts.
“We have enhanced the tradability of our gold reserves,” said the DNB Governor. “While we hope never to need them, it’s crucial to strengthen our resilience and preparedness.” This highlights the importance of liquidity in crisis planning.
The Netherlands confidently holds 612.4 tonnes of gold, valued at around $83.6 billion as of the end of 2025. Rather than relocating its entire stockpile, the Dutch Central Bank strategically moved 86 tonnes out of North America.
This move significantly increased the share of Dutch reserves in London, from 18.1% to 32.1%, while New York and Ottawa now each hold 18.5%.
Thirty percent of the bullion remains in the Netherlands. The operation clearly involved less bullion crossing the Atlantic than the figures imply. The bank sold approximately 59 tonnes in New York and strategically purchased an equivalent amount of market-standard gold in London.
Over 27 tonnes of gold moved physically from North America to the Netherlands, and a similar amount moved from the Netherlands to London. London is the global center for gold trading, and the Bank of England is the world’s second-largest gold custodian, behind the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The underground vaults hold over 400,000 gold bars owned by governments, central banks, and commercial institutions. An analyst at Cité Gestion Private Bank noted that this relocation is a “fairly one-off move.” However, if other central banks follow this trend, it could seriously weaken global confidence in the U.S.
France has taken similar steps, as the Banque de France replaced 129 tonnes of older gold stored in New York with modern, market-standard bars kept in Europe. However, the Netherlands’ decision appears driven more by the need for quick access to a liquid market than by relocating and modernizing its bullion.
While a single relocation doesn’t diminish the United States’ status as a global financial center, a consistent shift of gold and other reserves away from American institutions could have broader implications. This is particularly true if it indicates a growing lack of trust.
For Americans, this offers an important lesson in protective priorities: diversification, liquidity, and access. A portfolio spread across various assets that respond differently to inflation, market shocks, and instability may be better prepared for a crisis.
