Climate change has caused serious problems that significantly affect the Earth’s environment.
Glacier melting is causing sea levels to rise —a significant issue driven by global warming. Glaciers contain essential nutrients that support ocean life.
Research conducted by the University of California, San Diego, has conclusively shown that meltwater from a rapidly retreating Alaskan glacier is deficient in essential nutrients. This deficiency is having a significant negative impact on microorganisms and marine life.
A study in *Nature Communications*, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), finds iron and manganese deficiencies in regions that impact essential phytoplankton for marine food webs. It also examines the responses of two Alaskan glaciers to climate change.
Glaciers grind down bedrock, and their runoff carries sediments into the ocean. This runoff serves as an indirect nutrient source for marine ecosystems in high-altitude regions such as Alaska, Antarctica, and Greenland, supplying essential metals like iron and manganese.
Nutrients in the water foster phytoplankton growth, supporting marine food webs and absorbing carbon dioxide. In May 2022, researchers studied two nearby fjords on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula: one stable and the other, which had retreated by up to 9 miles since the 1950s.
Because they are close to each other, the glaciers ground over the same rock and likely produced similar meltwater. This led the team to sample sediments, icebergs, and water from both the stable Aialik Glacier and the retreating Northwestern Glacier.
Although both glaciers were in the same environment and eroded the same rock, their results differed significantly. The patterns observed could pose a serious risk to marine ecosystems, as many glaciers worldwide continue to retreat.
The stable Aialik Glacier contains 18% iron and 26% manganese in bioavailable forms, while the Northwestern Glacier has comparatively lower bioavailable iron (13%) and manganese (14-15%).
The retreating glacier exhibited significant chemical weathering and a lack of reactive metals. At the Northwestern Glacier, prolonged water-rock contact reduced nutrient availability. In contrast, the Aialik Glacier, with less water interaction, has higher levels of essential nutrients.
The researchers recommend studying meltwater sediments from different glacier systems over time for better insights. Kiefer Forsch, the lead author at Scripps, stated, “We observe clear geochemical differences between these two glacier systems related to their retreat.”
This snapshot captures two glaciers in one region. More research is needed to see if these patterns occur in other glaciers with different bedrock types and retreat stages.
A geochemist at Scripps who co-authored the study stated, “If we can replicate these findings elsewhere, it could impact important marine ecosystems and have long-term effects on major fisheries.”
