Is the Euphrates River Drying Up a Sign of the End of the World?

The drying up of the Euphrates River is undoubtedly a clear sign of the end times.

As the Bible predicted, the Euphrates River is drying up. However, rather than supernatural explanations like the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, there is a very real environmental issue driving this problem: chronic droughts and climate change.

The Euphrates River flows alongside the Tigris River through present-day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq before emptying into the Persian Gulf. It is the most extensive river system in Western Asia, with a basin that also extends into Iran.

The area surrounding these two rivers was historically part of the Fertile Crescent, which provided ideal conditions for the development of settled farming, eventually leading to the rise of some of the world’s first urban civilizations, including Mesopotamia.

Once a fertile region, the Tigris-Euphrates river system is now shrinking rapidly. In just a few decades, the flow of water in this system has decreased to nearly half of the average annual flow experienced during dry years.

Satellite images indicate that between 2003 and 2013, the Tigris and Euphrates River basins lost 144 cubic kilometers (34 cubic miles) of freshwater, resulting in some of the lowest water levels ever recorded. This decline is closely connected to the broader climate crisis impacting the planet.

The Middle East is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, which is expected to exacerbate existing issues with water scarcity. This poses significant challenges for both the environment and the local population.

Approximately 60 million individuals depend on water from the Euphrates-Tigris River system for their livelihoods, primarily in Turkey and Iraq.

Since the 2000s, international cooperation on managing the Tigris–Euphrates Basin has reportedly stalled, worsening local rivalries and geopolitical tensions among the countries sharing the river system.

The upcoming century may witness the emergence of several “water wars” as states and militia groups compete for access to vital water resources. One of the most critical areas for such conflicts is the Tigris-Euphrates region. This is due to its large population and the ongoing political instability that characterizes the area.

In addition to the risks of conflict and violence, disease remains a significant concern. An article published in the British Medical Journal in March 2023 examined the various health emergencies emerging in Iraq due to the struggle for access to clean water.

This situation has led to an increase in waterborne infectious diseases, such as cholera, as well as outbreaks of chickenpox, measles, and typhoid fever.

Concerns about the Tigris–Euphrates drying up have existed since Biblical times. In the Book of Revelation, the climactic finale of the New Testament, the Euphrates serves as a backdrop for the apocalypse.

Jeremiah 50:38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.

Revelations 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Revelations 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
