China: Humanoid robots are now participating in police patrols

Humanoid robots are now participating in police patrols in China, attracting public attention with their interactive features.

According to a Chinese online news outlet, the PM01 model robots from EngineAI have been observed wearing high-visibility police vests. They have been observed walking alongside officers in Shenzhen, shaking hands with pedestrians, and responding to voice commands.

A video of a robot waving to crowds has sparked interest in its role in law enforcement. Launched in December 2024, the PM01 humanoid robot features agile movement, an interactive display, and open-source support for global developers to enhance its capabilities.

The PM01 is a compact humanoid robot designed for researchers focusing on robotic and human integration. It features a 320-degree waist rotation, bionic movement mimicking humans, and an interactive core screen.

The PM01 features an aluminum alloy exoskeleton and is 17.6 pounds (8 kg) lighter and 27 cm shorter than EngineAI’s flagship SE01, which is 1.38 meters (4.5 feet) tall and weighs 88 pounds (40 kg). The PM01’s walking pace is 2 m/s (4.5 mph).

The robot is equipped with a quick-release battery, which provides up to two hours of operation on a single charge. The PM01 boasts 24 degrees of freedom (DoF), allowing for smooth and dynamic movement.

Its joint motors, with 12 DoF, offer enhanced flexibility, enabling it to perform complex tasks effectively. The PM01 is equipped with an Intel RealSense depth camera for advanced visual perception, as shown in EngineAI’s movie.

Its dual-chip architecture combines Intel N97 and NVIDIA Jetson Orin CPUs for high-performance computing. Both business and education versions are priced at ¥ $88,000 (about $12,000), $3,000 cheaper than Unitree’s G1 humanoid.

Last month, a Chinese startup revealed that its humanoid robot, the PM01, is the first to perform a front flip, drawing applause from onlookers. The video ends with the PM01 walking through the Shenzhen Tourist Information Center, highlighting EngineAI’s ongoing development.

China’s initiative to integrate robotics into law enforcement includes testing the RT-G, an autonomous spherical robot developed by Logon Technology.

In December 2024, Chinese law enforcement tested it. It is designed for extreme environments, capable of navigating land and water at speeds up to 22 mph (35 km/h), and withstanding impacts of up to 8,818 pounds (4 tons).

Despite significant advancements, today’s police robots still fall short of the advanced capabilities depicted in science fiction. Nevertheless, the progress that has been made is noteworthy.
