Officials from the Department of Agriculture announced the identification of H5N1 bird flu in a pig for the first time in Oregon.
This discovery has heightened concerns regarding the potential for transmitting the virus to humans. H5N1, primarily known as a strain of avian influenza, poses significant health risks, particularly if it were to adapt to allow easier transmission between species.
As public health officials assess the situation, they emphasize the importance of monitoring animal populations and any potential implications for human health.
Pigs are susceptible to infections from both human and bird viruses, which may allow H5N1 to develop into more transmissible variants.
The pig infection represents a troubling development in an outbreak that began earlier this year in dairy cows, spreading to dairy herds in at least 14 states and infecting 39 people.
This week, six cases of bird flu were confirmed in humans in Washington, and three additional cases were reported in California. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this brings the total number of human infections in the United States to 39 since April 2024.
The rate of human infections is accelerating, with over half of the confirmed cases occurring in just the past two weeks. Since the outbreak began, all human cases, except for two individuals in Missouri, resulted from direct contact with farm animals. An investigation into the Missouri cases was unable to determine how these two people, who lived together, came into contact with the virus.
However, the investigation confirmed that no healthcare workers who treated the patients were infected, alleviating concerns that the virus had gained the ability to spread between humans.
Officials emphasize that the risk to humans remains low, noting that genomic sequencing from the animal did not reveal any changes to the H5N1 virus, suggesting it is more transmissible.
There are no concerns regarding the nation’s pork supply, as the case was found on a backyard farm unrelated to the commercial food supply.
Officials reported that H5N1 was found during an operation involving a mixture of poultry, swine, and other livestock, including sheep and goats. They tested five pigs because the virus was detected in other animals on the farm.
One pig tested positive, two pigs tested negative, and results are pending for the two remaining pigs. The animals shared water sources, housing, and equipment, which enabled transmission on other farms.
The farm has been placed under quarantine. Officials emphasized the importance of biosecurity measures for both backyard farm operations and commercial farmers.
