Hidden for 2,000 Years—Bible Scrolls From Jesus’ Time Revealed

The Dead Sea Scrolls changed our understanding of the Bible by preserving some of the oldest surviving copies of Scripture.

Discovered in desert caves in 1947, these fragile manuscripts revealed biblical texts from the centuries before and during Jesus’ time, providing a rare insight into the existence of the Bible nearly 2,000 years ago.

Ancient fragments will be on display next month at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, through September. This rotation will feature rare texts, including portions of Isaiah, replacing previous displays of Psalms, Numbers, and Lamentations.

The rare Isaiah manuscript, copied by scribes in the 1st century AD in ancient Hebrew on leather, preserves sections from several chapters of a key prophetic book in the Bible.

The Book of Isaiah is a key prophetic work that warns of judgment on sinful nations and offers promises of restoration and hope, including passages that Christians believe foreshadow the coming Messiah.

The collection will showcase ancient writings, including an apocryphal account of Noah’s birth, passages from the Jewish Book of Tobit, and fragments of phylactery scrolls worn during prayer. The museum’s chief curator called these scrolls the greatest archaeological discovery of all time.

Discovered in the Qumran Caves near the Dead Sea, the scrolls include about 1,000 ancient manuscripts in thousands of fragments. They were written on vellum, papyrus, and thin metal sheets.

The scrolls are written in four languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Nabataean, the language of the ancient Nabataean people. The executive director of Israel’s Bible Lands Museum and a curator for the Washington, D.C., exhibit aim to enhance visitors’ understanding of the scrolls’ historical context.

We aim to help the public understand the significance of place, geography, and historical context related to the scrolls. We also include portions of the Book of Tobit, an ancient Jewish text from the Apocrypha that narrates a story of faith, healing, and divine guidance.

The museum exhibit displays notable artifacts from ancient Jerusalem, including a large paving stone from the first-century Pilgrim’s Road, which once guided worshippers from the Pool of Siloam to the temple.

The Magdala Stone, an intricately carved platform, is believed to have supported Torah scrolls in a synagogue in Mary Magdalene’s hometown by the Sea of Galilee. One side features a detailed carving of the menorah from the Temple in Jerusalem.

At the end of the exhibit, visitors see a 4,000-pound stone from the Temple Mount. Museum officials ensured that structural engineers confirmed the building’s floors could safely support this massive artifact.
