Part 2 What Archaeology Is Revealing About the Bible’s World

This fortified city near the Valley of Elah dates to the 10th century BCE, during King David’s reign. It functioned as an Israelite military outpost, suggesting an earlier centralized kingdom than some scholars thought. One inscription references the Judges.

The inscription carved into Hezekiah’s Tunnel marks the moment when workers from both ends met, offering a rare firsthand account from the biblical era. It has since been removed and is now displayed in a museum in Turkey.

A Greek inscription found near the Temple Mount warned Gentiles against entering the Temple’s sacred inner courts. It reinforces the strict rules found in the New Testament, indicating that violators would be responsible for their own deaths, linked to the time of Jesus.

Excavations at Jericho have revealed collapsed walls associated with the biblical conquest described in Joshua.

Small silver amulets discovered in Jerusalem, dating to around 600 BCE, feature a version of the priestly blessing from Numbers. Likely used for protection, they show that scripture was in use centuries before the Dead Sea Scrolls, reflecting a blend of faith.

A pottery shard from Gath, Goliath’s hometown, displays names similar to “Goliath” and dates to the time of the David and Goliath story. While it isn’t his exact name, it shows that such names existed, adding cultural authenticity to the narrative.

Shiloh was the resting place of the Tabernacle for centuries. Excavations have revealed sacrificial remains and storage rooms that correspond to biblical descriptions, making it a site of profound religious significance in Israel.

This 7th-century BCE inscription from Ekron names five kings and confirms the city’s biblical significance as a Philistine center, with one king linked to Assyrian records.

Found during a drought in the 1980s, this 1st-century fishing boat resembles those used by Jesus and his disciples on the Sea of Galilee. Though not the original, it brings Gospel stories to life and is displayed in a museum.

This desert fortress and palace, built by King Herod and mentioned in the New Testament, is believed to contain his tomb, which archaeologists discovered in 2007. Its grandeur reflects Herod’s infamous reputation as one of the era’s most impressive royal sites.

Unearthed in 2009, this carved stone from Magdala is one of the oldest depictions of the Second Temple. As Mary Magdalene’s hometown, it offers insight into her world and reflects a deep reverence for the Temple.

A small seal with Phoenician lettering belonged to Queen Jezebel. While not conclusively hers, its name and imagery reflect her luxury and power.

Excavations south of the Temple Mount have uncovered the core of ancient Jerusalem, featuring royal buildings, fortifications, and water systems.

A scroll, badly burned centuries ago, was unreadable until 2015 when researchers used new technology to “virtually unwrap” it. Inside, they found the Book of Leviticus, identical to the Hebrew Bible of today, highlighting the remarkable consistency of sacred texts over time.

Unearthed in 2016, this burial site offered crucial insights into the DNA and culture of the Philistines, Israel’s ancient biblical enemies. The remains suggest European genetic connections, supporting migration theories and reshaping our understanding of biblical ethnography.
