Vanishing Insects Are Now Linked to Rising Malnutrition

Insects are rapidly disappearing, and this loss threatens global food security for everyone.

In the past three decades, insect populations have sharply declined worldwide, prompting some scientists to call it an “insect apocalypse.” This reduction has harmed ecosystem health and crop yields, as many insects are vital for pollination.

Scientists have long struggled to measure the consequences of insect pollinator declines. A new paper, published on May 6 in the journal Nature, finally quantifies the impact of these declines on human health.

The scientists studied the links between wild pollinator populations, crop yields, and human diets in ten Nepalese farming villages over a year. Most food is grown locally. The team conducted biweekly surveys to track which pollinators visited which crops and correlated this data with malnutrition cases in the communities.

Insect pollinators contributed about 44% of the villagers’ farming income and over 20% of their essential nutrients, including vitamins A and E and folate. As pollinator numbers and diversity declined, so did income and dietary health.

“More than half of the children in our study were shorter than average for their age. This condition is primarily caused by poor diets that rely heavily on vegetables, legumes, and fruits that depend on insect pollination,” said a researcher at the University College London Institute for Global Health and a co-author of the study, in a statement.

The team warned that without changes in agriculture and fewer pollinators, villagers could face a 7% drop in vitamin A and folate intake by 2030, raising the risk of vision loss and birth defects.

The study conducted in farming communities in Nepal highlights the global impact of pollinator loss. About 2 billion people rely on smallholder farming, and approximately three-quarters of crops need insect pollination. Some crops, like coffee, almonds, and chocolate, are completely dependent on pollinators.

IIf current trends continue, many farmers may struggle to grow food effectively. However, the study found that interventions like planting native wildflowers, supporting wild bees, and reducing pesticide use can help boost pollinator numbers.

These measures could increase farming income by up to 30% and boost vitamin A and folate intake by 5% and 9%. “Biodiversity is essential for our health, nutrition, and livelihoods,” said a University of York ecologist.

In Hosea, the Bible gives a prophecy to Israel, which I’m sure applies today to the end of the world.

Hosea 4:1 The LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

2 Chronicles 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send diseases among my people;

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attend unto the prayer that is made in this place

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
