Mark Zuckerberg has announced the establishment of a new AI superintelligence unit at Meta, which will focus on developing artificial intelligence that surpasses human intelligence.
The Meta Superintelligence Lab is part of a major initiative by the tech giant to incorporate AI into all of its products, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The recent initiative has sparked controversy after several prominent researchers were recruited from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg offered ChatGPT employees up to $100 million to join his company, resulting in several of them joining the new superintelligence lab.
Former OpenAI employees who have already joined the Meta Superintelligence Lab include Shuchao Bi, Huiwen Chang, Ji Lin, Hongyu Ren, Jiahui Yu, and Shengjia Zhao. New appointments also include researchers from Google and Anthropic.
Meta’s CEO highlighted that the recent influx of talent would aid in developing “personal superintelligence” for billions of users.
He stated, “With the accelerating pace of AI progress, superintelligence is on the horizon. I believe this signals a new era for humanity, and I am committed to ensuring that Meta leads the way.”

The new lab is headed by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, who joined the company following Meta’s $14.3 billion investment in his startup, ScaleAI.
In a memo to staff, Mr. Zuckerberg expressed his expectation that Meta will reach the forefront of superintelligence within the next year or so, echoing similar predictions made by Mr. Altman.
Additionally, Meta’s new superintelligence lab will focus on enhancing the Llama models that support Meta AI across its various applications.
