Europe’s Great Drought: A Chilling Warning of the Last Days

The drought in Europe has turned thriving parks into barren landscapes, highlighting the urgent need for climate action.

Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

A series of interconnected emergencies is affecting various sectors, from food prices to energy production, with a projected short-term economic impact of at least €50 billion ($58 billion). Extreme summer temperatures have caused a significant water shortage,  driving river flows and water resources to historic lows across the continent.

Millions of people are facing water restrictions for the first time, significantly affecting unprepared countries. This summer, extreme heat has led to about 25,000 deaths in Europe, including over 9,500 in Germany during a late June heatwave.

France is experiencing its fifth consecutive heatwave, and cargo ships transporting goods to Rotterdam via the Rhine are operating at only 30% capacity to prevent grounding. Additionally, wheat production in the EU and the UK is expected to drop by 24% this year, costing producers around €2 billion.

France has pledged aid to a vulnerable sector amidst a worsening crisis. British Prime Minister called the situation a “powder keg.” Italy has requested water from Switzerland to save its rice fields, while Hungary has closed its only nuclear power plant because it lacks cooling water from the Danube.

As France faces its fifth heatwave, about 70% of the country is under water restrictions, and 40,000 people in 80 municipalities are experiencing supply cuts, relying on tankers or bottled water, according to the French Ministry of Ecological Transition.

About 67% of departments are facing a water crisis, limiting water use to essential activities only. Non-essential uses, like filling pools and washing cars, are banned. This drought is happening during the hottest and driest summer on record, with precipitation 67% below average. Groundwater reserves are 94% lower than normal, leading to aquifer deterioration. Over 1,000 watercourses have dried up, significantly affecting agricultural harvests.

The FNSEA, the main agricultural union, expects a 40% drop in maize harvests, with some regions facing declines of up to 70%. Additionally, poultry farms are experiencing high mortality rates due to a severe late-June heatwave.

In England, a drought is affecting 71.3% of the country, following the driest July since 1836. The south is particularly hard-hit, recording only 1% of expected rainfall. Over the past five years, three have been drought years: 2022, 2025, and 2026, impacting around 45 million residents.

Currently, 27 million people are under restrictions, including hosepipe bans. The UK government has also created contingency plans for limiting non-essential water use, affecting businesses and activities like irrigation, car washes, and filling private pools.

Last Friday, Burnham warned that the drought and five heatwaves since May have turned the UK into a “powder keg.” Agriculture is suffering significantly, with harvests brought in earlier than any time in the past 20 years, raising concerns about potential food shortages, according to the National Farmers’ Union. The livestock sector is already using winter feed reserves due to the lack of pasture.

In Germany, extreme temperatures, fires, and drought have prompted calls from environmental groups and the Green Party for faster adoption of climate measures, contrasting with the government’s cautious approach of simply “monitoring” the situation.

Drought is significantly impacting crop yields, with the Deutscher Raiffeisenverband reporting a loss of about three million tons of cereals and rapeseed since mid-June, resulting in a €600 million income loss. The German Farmers’ Association warns of major reductions in wheat and rapeseed, particularly in southern regions, which may face total losses. Experts believe this year’s losses could exceed those of the disastrous 2003 season.

Recent droughts have driven up vegetable prices, including carrots, cucumbers, and peppers. In some southern states, farmers are culling animals early due to dwindling forage reserves. In Italy, water scarcity has intensified in the north, while the south has sufficient reserves. To address the situation, Italy and Switzerland are temporarily increasing water flow from Lake Lugano to Lake Maggiore.

Extreme heat, drought, hail, and wildfires have resulted in over €3 billion in damage to Italian agriculture, according to Coldiretti. Rice production in Lombardy and Piedmont has been particularly hard hit, with yields dropping by 40% in the worst areas.

Other crops, including corn, soybeans, fruits, and vegetables, are also suffering due to lack of rain and rising irrigation costs. Additionally, the Rhine River, Italy’s key waterway, has reached record low flow levels.

2 Chronicles 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

2 Chronicles 7:14  If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Deuteronomy 11:17 And then the Lord‘s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
