For decades, drought in the U.S. has focused on the Southwest and interior West, with states like Nevada, Arizona, and California making headlines as reservoirs like Lake Mead reach near record lows.
The Southern Plains and the Southwest US are known for drought, with no improvement in sight. While these areas have faced over six years of severe drought, more alarming changes were occurring in the Southeast. Once seen as water-rich with swamps and thunderstorms, the Southeast is now increasingly experiencing water scarcity.
The Southeast, typically humid, faced a record drought from September 2025 to March 2026, the driest for Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina since 1895. Alabama was the second driest state, Florida third, Tennessee ninth, and Virginia tenth, highlighting the drought’s severity.
Rainfall deficits in the Southeast have rapidly increased, with most areas receiving 4 to 8 inches less rain than normal since the beginning of the year. By April, the drought conditions worsened, with over 80 percent of the region experiencing severe to exceptional drought—the highest level recorded for April since monitoring began in 2000.
This vulnerability largely stems from the winter season, when the region usually restores its water reserves. However, persistent dryness prevented this recharge, leaving the Southeast with less stored water as it entered the warmer months.
Regions that usually receive abundant rainfall struggle to remain resilient when drought occurs, as their infrastructure and ecosystems aren’t equipped for long dry spells. When seasonal rainfall fails, there is little support for summer.
The Southeast experienced heavy rainfall, while the northern and central Plains faced a rapid decline. Nebraska’s extreme drought rose from 0% to 50% in one year, and Wyoming’s increased from 0% to 41%. Oklahoma and Colorado also saw significant rises. Forecasters consider this rapid shift historically rare, and it contributes to the extensive national drought map.
Rainfall totals often get attention, but drought affects groundwater for longer. Satellite data shows stress below the surface, even in areas that seem fine based on rainfall maps. Observations from March 30, 2026, revealed that shallow groundwater aquifers were driest in northern and central Florida, a trend also noted across the eastern United States.
Groundwater levels dropped several feet in spring 2026 and remained below last year’s maximum, taking much longer to recover than rainfall. While wildfires have typically been seen as a western issue, that view is shifting. Dry conditions are now impacting regions with more vegetation and less firefighting infrastructure.
The Southeastern U.S. is facing widespread drought, with many areas experiencing severe conditions. This has led to an outbreak of spring wildfires, with high fire risk continuing through at least July. Florida is particularly affected, with nearly 82 percent of the state in extreme drought.
Even humid forests, which rarely issue fire warnings, now require them, underscoring that fire risk depends on moisture shortages. The rapid escalation has caused confusion, prompting meteorologists to use specific terms for such quick changes.
Flash drought occurs when low precipitation is coupled with unusually high temperatures, strong winds, or changes in solar radiation, differing from slow-evolving droughts that develop gradually.
As of July 28, 2026, drought conditions have worsened for the third week in a row across much of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, affecting around 40 percent of the U.S. and Puerto Rico and nearly 48 percent of the contiguous states. Meanwhile, the Southeast has experienced some relief by early summer.

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
