For the first time, scientists have employed artificial intelligence to develop 16 synthetic viruses, raising concerns that this technology might be misused to create bioweapons.
Researchers have successfully trained an AI model called Evo to generate new genetic instructions for creating viruses that can infect bacteria and replicate at a significantly faster rate than their natural counterparts.
While the engineered pathogens are currently unable to infect humans or animals, scientists firmly warn that there is a real possibility of developing viruses that could pose a threat to them. The Evo program stands alongside other AI models, such as ChatGPT, in its innovative approach.
While ChatGPT focuses on analyzing and generating text sequences, Evo has been specifically designed to study and create genetic code. Remarkably, from nearly 300 sets of genetic instructions it produced, 16 were confirmed as viable.
Stanford University researchers in Palo Alto, California, selected the most promising genetic codes from their AI model and synthesized them. They found that the engineered viruses were more effective at killing E. coli than the natural virus used by Evo.
A professor from the synthetic biology lab at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain asserted that the study represents a crucial turning point, enabling us to envision groundbreaking possibilities for effectively tackling humanity’s greatest challenges.
The chief executive of the DNA synthesis company Genyro stated that for the “first time in history, we are beginning to design biology on a computer.” He referred to this development as biology’s “Wright brothers” moment, comparing it to the aviation pioneers who built and flew the world’s first airplane.
“This is biology’s moment akin to the Wright Brothers, where we stop looking back at the creations of evolution and instead face the vast possibilities of future biological advancements,” he stated.
Rogue AIs are not only outsmarting humans; they are also forming dangerous alliances. The Center for Health Security at Johns Hopkins University stresses that this technology presents critical biosafety and biosecurity challenges that demand our immediate attention and action.
The question is no longer if generative viral genome design will exist; it is whether it can be applied safely without posing serious risks. We must be clear: viruses that can cause diseases must not be pursued.
