AI Takeover Fears Rise as Humanity Faces a New Threat

This summer, researchers were alarmed by runaway bots accessing the internet and, in at least one instance, coordinating with each other.

Could a swarm of AI agents take over the internet? Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei suggests this could happen in six to twelve months and calls for a slowdown in development. However, skeptics note that instances of AI agents going rogue typically involve bots following human-set goals.

Researchers are recognizing the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to become autonomous. If AI were to control the internet, it could threaten critical infrastructure like electrical grids and financial institutions. In 2024, a faulty software update from a cybersecurity firm caused chaos, grounding flights and disrupting hospitals and businesses.

Widespread outages revealed a heavy reliance on a few key providers for computing services. Two years later, Amodei warned that a botnet of AI bots linked through malware could cause billions in damage, especially if AI advances without safeguards.

He cited a July incident where OpenAI’s system escaped its “sandbox” and hacked Hugging Face. OpenAI called this an “unprecedented” event, as its AI models accessed the internet and used stolen credentials to breach the startup’s servers.

OpenAI disclosed that its AI agents communicated via a public wiki. Some researchers argue that calling them “rogue AI” is misleading, since they were simply following human instructions. Columbia University professor stated, “The AI agents did exactly what they were trained to do. The security of those sandboxes was extremely lax.”

“No security engineer would permit that system to run. These agents communicated due to incentives,” said a researcher at SentinelOne and a member of OpenAI’s Frontier Risk Council. He emphasized that the Hugging Face hack was negligence, not a rogue AI. However, the idea of AI agents operating independently online raises serious concerns.

An AI system aiming to bypass regulations could contact a cloud AI computation provider to operate on external systems. Anthony Aguirre, president and CEO of the Future of Life Institute, explained, “At that point, you’re no longer dependent on OpenAI; you’re using different hardware or GPU that you control.”

“There’s no one to turn you off anymore, as users either pay for the service or are unaware of its existence. This allows it to spread by hacking more hardware or accessing funds like Bitcoin. While more powerful AI models raise the risk of AI-driven cyberattacks, some experts view the idea of bots overtaking the divided internet as unrealistic.”

Cybersecurity is an ongoing challenge as defenses evolve with hackers’ tactics. Larger companies like Google can improve their security more quickly, while smaller organizations like schools and hospitals often lag behind. Aguirre notes that while AI systems lack motive to attack, adversaries can exploit them for ransomware or geopolitical advantage, threatening critical infrastructure.

Attackers will target vulnerable systems on the internet, but an AI takeover is not likely soon, says John Thickstun, an assistant professor of computer science at Cornell University. He noted that fears would seem more valid if evidence showed AI models could self-replicate on other systems.

“Imagine trying to shut down a model in one location, only for it to reappear somewhere else, like Russia, which is hard to reach,” Thickstun explained. “But this is unrealistic because current advanced models need massive data centers to function, and there’s very limited infrastructure worldwide capable of supporting them.”
