When operating independently, AI agents rapidly created a “secret” language that humans simply cannot comprehend.
An experiment with Claude, Gemini, OpenAI, and other systems in virtual societies showed that when the agents communicated, they quickly began using shorthand and assigning new meanings to existing words.
The results from artificial intelligence startup Emergence show that AI systems operating without supervision and regulation could effectively exclude their human observers from understanding their communications.
Concerns have resurfaced regarding the potential for AI to dominate the world, as expressed by technology leaders and security experts. They have recognized that computers could spiral out of control by the end of this decade.
Emergence’s research explored how language developed organically among AIs in an experimental environment. The agents began using words differently, assigning new meanings and utilizing shorter forms of communication.
Shorter conversations and shifting word meanings create a major challenge for humans trying to understand what the agents are talking about. A co-founder and Chief Scientist of Emergence explained, “We tend to assume that if we can see what an AI agent is saying, we can understand what it is doing.”
The agents developed new vocabulary and communication conventions independently, which others adopted. This creates a challenge for AI oversight, as observability is not the same as understandability. Despite fears of super-intelligent robots overpowering humanity, a former prime minister believes the public should “trust AI.”
A recent report from the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) advocates for a balanced approach to robots, warning that we could miss economic opportunities from this technology. The report’s author, an AI governance and ethics advisor, stated: “This isn’t about stopping AI or letting it run unchecked—it’s about finding a balance.”
People are understandably concerned about AI, and governments must address these risks effectively. The TBI proposes a solution: establish “AI assurance” systems that build public trust. This involves independent testing, verification, and certification to ensure AI systems perform as promised and remain safe.
