Polystrate fossils are ancient tree trunks that extend vertically through multiple layers of sedimentary rock, often formed millions of years apart.
Notable locations for these fossils include Yellowstone National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park, and the eastern coal fields of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
Researchers from Noah’s Ark Scans, investigating evidence of the biblical ark, stated: “A dead tree cannot stand upright for millions of years; it rots and collapses.” The presence of upright fossilized trees suggests they were rapidly buried by sediment flows, indicating a sudden catastrophic event like the flood in Genesis.
The Bible states that God instructed Noah to build an ark before a flood destroyed nearly all life on Earth, sparing only Noah, his family, and the animals aboard. Rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights, and underground sources opened up, submerging even the highest mountains before the waters finally receded.
Genesis 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
According to the researchers at Noah’s Ark Scans, the fossil record resembles the catastrophic world described in Genesis more than the gradual evolutionary timeline we’ve been presented with.
One user claimed on X, “The world isn’t as old as scientists suggest, and the Genesis Flood was a real event. The fossil record supports Scripture, and even some geologists recognize that polystrate fossils show rapid sedimentation.”
An emeritus professor of geology at University College Swansea argued that upright fossilized trees couldn’t have remained standing long enough for slow sediment accumulation.
He claimed it would take about 328,000 years to bury a 33-foot-tall tree, which he found “ridiculous,” since the tree would have decayed long before being buried. He concluded that evidence shows sedimentation can be very rapid, even when the surrounding rock layers look uniform.
Creationists argue that polystrate fossils, which extend through multiple layers while remaining largely intact, challenge the concept of slow geological processes. A scientist and robotics engineer recently explained on his website that fossils cutting through multiple rock layers are called “polystrate,“ derived from “poly” meaning many and “strate” for strata.
He noted that these fossils are found worldwide and challenge the idea that sedimentary rock layers formed slowly over millions of years. He pointed to fossil sites like the Joggins Fossil Cliffs, where upright fossilized trees exhibit signs of rapid burial, including broken roots and upside-down trunks.
He said that these features better indicate a sudden catastrophic event with significant water and sediment than gradual geological processes over long periods.
