The World Is Using Sand Faster Than Nature Can Replace It.
The global sand mining industry extracts about 50 billion metric tons annually, outpacing the natural replenishment rate.
According to a report by the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP), the demand for sand in the building sector is projected to increase by 45%.
The director of UNEP’s GRID-Geneva program recently called sand an “unrecognized hero of development,” highlighting its essential role in supporting biodiversity and vulnerable coastal communities, which is often overlooked.
“Sand is crucial for protecting against sea level rise, storm surges, and salinization of coastal aquifers—all worsened by climate change,” he stated. The impacts of unsustainable sand extraction are evident in Southeast Asia, a key region for sand supply and demand.
The report emphasizes that large-scale land reclamation and urban development projects have resulted in irreversible river erosion, coastal degradation, and a loss of local livelihoods.
In the Philippines, dredging for a new airport displaced 700 families and damaged important fishing areas. Likewise, sand mining in the Mekong River has led to riverbank collapses and decreased wet-season flows into Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake.
The UNEP report highlights that sand resource governance is fragmented and primarily focused on short-term economic gains, resulting in serious long-term environmental and social costs that need urgent attention.
The report calls for a comprehensive overhaul of industry processes, urging governments to adopt national and sectoral roadmaps for responsible sand management.
The report recommends that decision-makers prioritize coordinated governance, enhanced monitoring, and long-term planning to effectively balance developmental needs with environmental protection.
