Scientists are warning about a “Godzilla” El Niño, which is expected to disrupt ecosystems this year.
Concerns are rising about the storm’s strength, as El Niño can significantly impact energy demand, agriculture, and wildfire risk, leading to severe flooding and drought worldwide.
The United Nations reported that El Niño-related rainfall changes are expected to cause droughts in some areas and severe flooding in others, threatening crops, livestock, and water supplies across Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
Concerns about El Niño are continue to rise, with the past 11 years marking the hottest period on record. This escalating trend demands immediate attention and action.
Earlier this month, NASA revealed that warmer-than-average sea temperatures in the tropical Pacific were detected. Satellite sea level data indicated a large wave of warm water in the Pacific Ocean near South America, suggesting that El Niño may develop later this year.
El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by warmer sea temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, disrupting atmospheric circulation. This affects the jet stream, leading to heavy rain and snow in some areas while creating dry and hot conditions elsewhere.
The intensity of El Niño storms revealing warmer-than-average sea temperatures in the tropical Pacific, noting that satellite sea level data detected a large wave of warm water with the distance between opposing weather patterns.
El Niño events usually peak in November and January and can lead to severe weather from Southeast Asia to the Pacific Northwest. According to NASA researcher Severine Fournier, Peru is often the focal point, with effects potentially lasting until 2027.
Peru, situated in the Southern Hemisphere, is unexpectedly experiencing summer-like conditions with abundant sunshine and warm waters as it transitions into winter. This unusual weather is largely due to intensified westerly winds.
This suggests that more warm water could flow from the Western Pacific to the coast of Peru, intensifying El Niño. That climate change is amplifying its effects, making this year’s event “on steroids,” whether or not it sets records.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced that El Niño is developing, as shown by above-average sea surface temperatures in the central to eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Although terms like “Super El Niño” or “Godzilla El Niño” are used informally, NOAA does not adopt them.
The NOAA stated, “There is a 63% chance of a very strong El Niño from November to January, potentially ranking among the largest since 1950. While impacts vary by location, stronger events can increase the likelihood of expected outcomes.”
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns of a 90% chance that El Niño will last until at least November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) adds that these conditions are expected to strengthen into the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026-2027.
As climate change and rising global temperatures become increasingly concerning, the U.N. has warned that El Niño could cause significant harm to already vulnerable regions.
