Severe floods are drastically reducing rice yields worldwide, threatening farmers’ livelihoods and impacting family grocery budgets.
Over 4 billion people depend on rice as a vital source of nutrition. In many countries, rice is a fundamental staple, constituting up to 70% of total caloric intake, according to the World Economic Forum.
From 1980 to 2015, researchers found that rice-killing floods—extreme events that fully submerge plants for at least 7 days—increased in frequency.
Rice flourishes in wet environments, but it cannot endure prolonged submersion. A study published in Science Advances clearly underscores the urgent need for flood-resistant rice varieties.
The study found that rice yields decline by 4.3% each year due to extreme flooding, resulting in a loss of up to 18 million tons of rice annually. Such significant losses of a crop that feeds more than half of the global population present a serious threat to food security.
Loss of rice yields can lead to starvation for millions. However, rice is not the only crop facing threats. Prolonged droughts, destructive storms, and plant diseases are disrupting agricultural lands worldwide. All these issues are linked to a continually warming planet.
The latest report from the World Meteorological Organization indicates that the world experienced its highest average temperature on record last year, reaching 2.79 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels. Scientists caution that further warming is likely in the years ahead.
As the world continues to warm, weather patterns are becoming increasingly unpredictable, making it more challenging for farmers to cultivate their crops. Many countries are already facing shortages of essential foods, including vegetables, wheat, olive oil, and other staple crops. This has led to higher prices and has put a strain on family budgets.
Food scarcity is not only an environmental issue; it also has social and economic implications. When crops fail, farmers lose their income, local businesses struggle, and people lose their jobs. This results in reduced purchasing power, making food more difficult to afford for everyone.
Researchers and governments are taking decisive action to develop solutions that will ensure crops are resilient to pests, tolerant of floods, and adaptable to climate change. Furthermore, farmers are actively implementing innovative agricultural practices to effectively respond to shifting weather patterns.
