Polar warming is a global health emergency, new study finds

Climate change in Earth’s polar regions is a significant driver of global health risks, impacting areas beyond the Arctic and Antarctic.

An international team of scientists, led by a professor from the University of Exeter Business School, has developed a framework that highlights the connections between changes in the Arctic and Antarctic and their potential to worsen climate-related health impacts worldwide.

The researchers conducted a comprehensive review of scientific literature across climate science, public health, and other disciplines.

They found that current models inadequately capture how changes in polar regions impact global health issues, including chronic diseases, mental health challenges, and pregnancy complications.

They urge the inclusion of amplified health risks in planning and policy. “Polar change is not a distant crisis,” said the Research Fellow at Arctic Basecamp, who is the lead author of the paper.

Research shows that melting ice sheets, rising sea levels, and changing weather patterns have far-reaching effects beyond the Arctic and Antarctic, impacting food security, disease burdens, and health infrastructure.

“This is not just an environmental issue; it is a global health emergency. The study shows that the polar regions are warming faster than the global average, potentially triggering feedback loops that reshape interconnected global health risks.”

Increased temperatures are weakening the jet stream and disrupting ocean currents, leading to more severe injuries, fatalities, and mental health issues from extreme weather. An ice-free Arctic may also lead to more frequent and intense El Niño events, exacerbating heat waves in tropical regions.

Rising temperatures are expected to increase the incidence of kidney and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, melting ice sheets may raise sea levels, contaminating drinking water with higher salinity.

This could lead to more cases of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, higher infant mortality, and various cancers. Polar warming could reduce agricultural productivity by disrupting precipitation and temperature patterns, thereby increasing the burden of malnutrition-related diseases.

Additionally, warming is spreading insect- and animal-borne diseases like vibriosis, dengue fever, and Lyme disease into previously unaffected northern regions.

Melting polar ice is increasing flooding, spreading waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid, and worsening respiratory issues. In the Arctic, melting permafrost and sea ice threaten infrastructure and could release harmful pollutants and ancient pathogens, such as the 1918 influenza virus.

The study highlights the risks to traditional food sources from changes in ocean ecosystems, leading to increased malnutrition, miscarriages, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease in Arctic communities with fragile health care systems.

The new framework highlights the link between polar physical changes and regional and global health risks, urging better integration of these amplified health risks into human health impact assessments.

“We cannot ignore these potential causes of disease and death,” stated the Hoffmann Impact Professor for Accelerating Action on Nature and Climate. “Collaboration among climate scientists, health professionals, and data experts is essential to prevent harm and address future challenges.”
