Tension escalated in Europe after a Russian aircraft was detected in NATO airspace.
NATO decisively scrambled fighter jets in response to an aggressive missile and drone attack by Putin over Ukraine, following a reported breach of its airspace by a Russian drone in NATO member Lithuania.
Ukraine went on high alert after Vladimir Putin launched three MiG-31K aircraft with hypersonic missiles. Russia subsequently executed a second strike on Starokostiantyniv Air Base using Kinzhal missiles.
In response to Russian aggression, NATO fighters were deployed over Poland. In Lithuania, a Russian drone was spotted in its airspace, triggering a security alert around 5 AM.
A drone, thought to have illegally entered from Belarus, a country allied with Putin, was detected near the capital, Vilnius. The drone initially appeared to be a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle, which is a type commonly used by Putin to carry out devastating attacks in his war against Ukraine.
Reports identified the drone as a Russian-made Gerbera with an eight-foot wingspan, designed to deceive air defense systems rather than cause explosions. Both models are Russian military drones, but a final identification is still pending.
This month marks the second reported violation of Lithuanian airspace by a Russian drone from Belarus, potentially testing NATO defenses. Despite the alert, Vilnius airport stayed operational.
Law enforcement reported that an unidentified drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus on the morning of July 28, according to a police statement. The public is advised not to approach any fallen drones and to report them immediately by calling the emergency number 112.
The police reported a drone sighting at around 200 meters (656 feet) near Vilnius. Darius Buta from the National Crisis Management Centre stated that all forces have been mobilized. Residents are urged to call 112 if they see the drone and not to approach it.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene indicated that a drone might have entered her country due to interference from Ukrainian electronic warfare. She noted, “The ongoing efforts to disorient Russian drones increase the likelihood of them being lost.”
Giedrimas Jeglinskas, head of the parliamentary committee on National Security and Defense, confirmed on LRT Radio that an unmanned aircraft was seen entering Lithuania from Belarus.
Meanwhile, in Warsaw, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces reported the deployment of fighter jets in response to Russian missile strikes on Ukraine.
The military has stated, “To ensure the safety of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces has activated necessary measures.” It added that Polish and Allied aircraft have been scrambled, and air defense and radar systems are on high alert.
The statement highlighted the protective intent of the actions, declaring, “These actions are preventive and aim to secure airspace and protect citizens in nearby areas.” Visual evidence showed missile strikes, likely Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles, targeting the Starokostiantyniv air base in the Khmelnytskyi region, which houses Ukraine’s tactical bomber force.
Kyiv was hit by a Russian offensive that injured eight civilians, including a three-year-old child, and severely damaged multiple floors of a residential tower in the Darnytskyi district.
This attack reflects the continued targeting of civilians while President Putin ignores peace negotiations suggested by Donald Trump. A separate Russian drone strike on a passenger bus in the Sumy border region resulted in three deaths and twenty injuries.
