The icy layers are melting at an alarming rate and uncovering organisms thought to be extinct ancient viruses that have been perfectly preserved for thousands of years. Scientists are discovering that these long-dormant microbes still possess the potential to infect and spread.
As global warming accelerates, the permafrost is thawing increasingly fast, along with the potential for ancient viruses to become infectious again. This warning comes from an international team of researchers from Russia, Germany, and France.
The team includes genomics, microbiology, and geoscience experts, some of whom have been tracking these re-emerging viruses for almost a decade. Found so far is the 1918 Influenza virus in a woman buried nearly 80 years prior in a mass grave of influenza victims in Alaska.
Another virus, called Pithovirus sibericum, was discovered 100 feet beneath the Siberian permafrost in 2014, making it infectious again for the first time in 30,000 years.
An ancient strain of the smallpox virus, which was declared eradicated 30 years ago, was found, which could become a disease of humans again in modern times.
These Giant viruses also dwarf other viruses in terms of genetic complexity. The newly discovered Pithovirus contains 500 genes, and the aforementioned Pandoravirus can contain up to 2,500. For comparison, the HIV virus contains only about 12 genes.
