A team is investigating a boat-shaped formation in Turkey for traces of Noah’s Ark. They are testing samples from the 515-foot structure to check for wood, according to the group’s founder.
Last week, an international team of archaeologists, geologists, and soil scientists started drilling into the Durupınar Formation to collect core samples using a Gopher drone, an underground robot. Preliminary radar data revealed no uniform solid-rock signature.
His U.S.-based team is working with Bakhtar Research and Engineering LLC, whose scientists conducted the radar survey. “We have recovered rich organic material that may be the decayed remains of the Ark,” he said last week. “So far, no bedrock or solid limestone has been found in the drilled holes.”
Recent findings challenge the idea that this formation is just natural limestone or bedrock. “We haven’t identified any ancient wood or its age,” he said, noting that lab results are pending. While drilling at 4 to 5 meters deep, the drill bit broke on a hard layer. “It could be petrified wood or a hard rock block. We want to test both possibilities.”
In our recent announcement, I suggested that the layers may be decayed remnants of Noah’s Ark, though this is still a hypothesis. Noah’s Ark Scans, an independent U.S. research group, believes the Ark’s remains lie in the Durupınar Formation and aims to prove that samples from the area are wood, countering claims that it is just natural rock.
“If the interior material matches the surrounding earthflow, it clearly supports a natural origin. However, if it differs in ways that cannot be explained by the natural setting, that will be significant,” he stated. He emphasized this point strongly.
The findings have not yet undergone independent peer review, and that stage is still upcoming. The structure identified in 1959, which has drawn those searching for Noah’s Ark, is located south of Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey, a region mentioned in the biblical account.

“We believe the Durupınar Formation is the remains of Noah’s Ark, which is why we want to conduct rigorous scientific testing. Jones noted that his team collected samples from beneath the Formation that are not bedrock or solid limestone, and laboratory tests are still needed to identify the material.”
“The laboratory work will measure organic content, mineralogy, and use microscopy, along with further tests based on initial findings,” he said. The team will compare samples from inside the boat-shaped outline with those from outside control holes. “Our priorities are to complete the lab work and correlate the physical results with geophysical interpretations,” he explained.
He said initial laboratory results are expected to be available over the winter. The team plans to produce a more detailed scientific report in spring 2027. A second field season is planned for 2027, pending permit approval; however, he emphasized that they are not announcing any plans for large-scale excavation.
