The Vanishing Glaciers: Another Warning Sign in a Warming World

Pizol was once a glacier, but climate change has reduced it to scattered chunks of ice. It is not alone; thousands of glaciers have disappeared in recent decades, and as temperatures rise, more are expected to vanish quickly.

Recent research reveals how rapidly glaciers are vanishing, and the findings are alarming. By the middle of the century, the annual number of disappearing glaciers could peak at up to 4,000, according to a study published on Monday in Nature Climate Change.

This is comparable to losing all the glaciers in the European Alps in just one year. Research has primarily concentrated on the total volume or area of ice lost from glaciers as temperatures rise, rather than on changes in their total number.

The study’s authors emphasize the importance of understanding when and where individual glaciers will disappear. They state that climate change not only causes ice to melt but also leads to the complete extinction of many glaciers. A glaciologist from ETH Zürich, who participated in Pizol’s memorial service in 2019, expressed this perspective.

The scientists examined the planet’s glaciers using a global database to determine the period of “peak glacier extinction,” which refers to the time when the most glaciers vanish.

Researchers utilized models to identify when each glacier would shrink to a size that no longer qualifies as a glacier. This threshold is defined as either when the glacier’s area decreases to below 0.01 square kilometers (0.4 square miles) or when it retains less than 1% of its original volume, as measured around the year 2000.

The analysis revealed that glacier extinction is expected to peak around the middle of this century, with the timing and extent varying based on the degree of global warming. If climate pledges are fulfilled, the world is currently projected to experience approximately 2.7 degrees of warming. The researchers also focused on specific regions for a more detailed understanding.

In regions where smaller glaciers are prevalent, such as the European Alps, parts of the Andes, and northern Asia, more than half of the glaciers are expected to disappear within the next two decades, according to the report. In contrast, areas with larger glaciers, including Greenland and the Russian Arctic, will experience a delayed peak in glacier loss, occurring later in the century.

At a temperature increase of 4 degrees, the world faces a near-total loss of glaciers. “This study effectively highlights that glaciers are melting globally, with many expected to vanish entirely in the coming decades, and this trend is accelerating,” said a professor of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine, who was not involved in the research.
