The Next Climate Shock Is Here — And the UN Says Prepare Now

The UN weather agency warned on Tuesday that a strong El Niño could raise global temperatures and increase the risk of extreme weather in the coming months.

El Niño is a periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that usually lasts 9 to 12 months, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

The WMO stated that warm ocean waters are fueling El Niño’s development and predicted above-average temperatures globally from June to August, with El Niño expected to continue until November.

Officials have noted uncertainty about the strength of the upcoming El Niño, as models vary in predicting its severity. However, the WMO Secretary-General stressed the need for preparedness, stating, “We must get ready for a potentially strong El Niño, which could worsen droughts, cause heavy rainfall, and increase the risk of heatwaves on land and in the ocean.”

The weather pattern disrupts regional climates, bringing warmer global temperatures and increased rainfall to southern South America, parts of the United States, the Horn of Africa, and central Asia.

El Niño can cause droughts in Australia, Central America, Indonesia, and parts of South Asia, while increasing hurricane formation in the central and eastern Pacific, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The strong El Niño from 2023 to 2024 contributed to 2024 being the hottest year on record.

Extreme heat increases risks, including the spread of diseases from mosquitoes and ticks, as well as reduced food and water supplies. “Communities already struggling will be pushed even further beyond their limits,” she said.

Consumers are facing rising food prices due to inflation driven by the war in Iran, with El Niño potentially exacerbating the situation. The CEO of Barry Callebaut warned that crop yields in Ecuador and West Africa—accounting for 60% of global cocoa production—might decline. “We are observing this very cautiously,” he noted in a media call on Tuesday.

“El Niño could affect prices, potentially reaching a few thousand per ton. London cocoa futures are currently at £2,944 ($3,964.10) per metric ton, down from over £9,000 in April 2024. National weather agencies predict this might be the strongest El Niño in a decade.”

The WMO has noted subsurface temperatures in the tropical Pacific exceeding 6 degrees Celsius (10.8 degrees Fahrenheit) above average, thereby contributing to surface warming.

The U.N. Secretary-General is calling the situation an urgent climate warning. He stated, “El Niño conditions will worsen the challenges of a warming planet.”
