On June 1, the Ukrainians launched a surprising and destructive attack against Russia’s nuclear-capable long-range bomber force, catching them off guard.
Ukrainian forces launched a bold surprise attack by deploying drones hidden in civilian container trucks parked near airbases deep inside Russia. This strategy effectively targeted and damaged dozens of valuable bombers. Despite generating considerable excitement in international media, the level of destruction was not as extensive as Kyiv’s forces initially asserted.
Russia cannot rest on its laurels, as detecting and deterring surprise drone attacks remains challenging. To protect their irreplaceable Tu-160 bombers—known as “Blackjack” by NATO—Russia has relocated at least two of them to the Anadyr airfield in the Far East, only 310 miles from Alaska. This move aims to keep the bombers safe from Ukrainian targeting.
The Tu-160s, along with Russia’s other long-range, nuclear-capable bombers, have been increasingly used for strikes against key targets in Ukraine. However, positioning them at the far eastern end of Russia complicates their ability to conduct these operations. The costs of maintenance, fuel, and munitions needed for missions from Anadyr are prohibitively high.
The Tu-160 bombers are currently over 3,000 miles from the frontlines in Ukraine. Developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s, it is the largest, heaviest, and fastest bomber in service today, with a maximum speed of Mach 2.05 (approximately 1,380 mph) and a cruising speed of Mach 0.9 (approximately 597 mph). In comparison, the U.S. B-1B Lancer has a top speed of Mach 1.25 (900 mph).
The Tu-160 has a maximum range of 7,643 miles and a service ceiling of about 52,500 feet, powered by four NK-32 afterburning turbofan engines, each producing 55,116 pounds of thrust.
It can carry up to 99,208 pounds of ordnance in its two internal weapons bays, including nuclear-capable Kh-55SM, Kh-101, Kh-102, and Kh-555 cruise missiles, conventional Kh-15 short-range missiles, and precision-guided or free-fall bombs. The aircraft can also deploy advanced weapons, such as the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile.
The aircraft features advanced electronic countermeasures, radar warning receivers, and chaff and flare dispensers to counter missile threats. Russia has a limited number of these planes but is rapidly constructing new ones, aiming to have 50 new airframes operational in the air force by the 2030s.
The modernized Tu-160M first flew in 2022, with deliveries continuing to replace older models. Developed by the Soviet Union as a counter to the United States’ B-1 Lancer, the Tu-160 has served both the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Moscow aims to enhance the protection of its remaining Tu-160s by relocating them to safer areas.
