Glaciers and ice sheets do not break apart in sudden, dramatic collapses as depicted in movies.
Glaciers are slowly migrating toward the ocean, carrying large amounts of ice that eventually melt. Scientists have monitored this movement with satellites for ten years, and their findings are reshaping our understanding of rising sea levels and coastal futures.
Forget the Hollywood portrayal of ice sheets suddenly crashing into the ocean. In reality, ice masses in Greenland and Antarctica shift slowly, resembling frozen rivers in super slow motion. These massive ice rivers move forward continuously, day after day, year after year.
Scientists have found that the gradual movement of ice, rather than sudden breaks, is the main cause of ice loss in polar regions. While dramatic images of ice shelves calving attract attention, most ice reaches the ocean through a continuous, slow process that occurs whether or not it is being filmed.
This ongoing process has been reshaping the planet’s ice for thousands of years. The rate at which ice moves from land to ocean is vital for our coastlines. Ice on land does not raise sea levels, but when it melts in the ocean, it increases water volume and causes shorelines to rise.
Scientists track ice velocity to determine how much land-based ice is melting into the ocean. Faster ice flow leads to higher sea levels, making ice speed a crucial metric in climate science. Researchers use these rates to create models that predict future flooding in coastal cities.
Even small changes in ice velocity can significantly impact communities from Miami to Mumbai. This understanding helps governments plan to build seawalls and relocate neighborhoods at risk from rising sea levels. Every day, vast amounts of ice move from Greenland and Antarctica toward their edges.
Imagine a conveyor belt moving ice from glaciers to coastal areas where it meets the ocean. This daily movement occurs year-round, driven by gravity along ancient paths. Some glaciers can transport enough ice in a single day to fill thousands of Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Scientists are increasingly concerned about Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica. Over a ten-year period, its speed increased from 34.8 to 41.7 feet per day, particularly at the point where grounded ice begins to float. This glacier is considered one of Antarctica’s most unstable ice masses, with its grounding line retreating inland.
Antarctica’s ice melts not only from warm air above but also from warming ocean currents that reach beneath floating ice shelves. This underwater melting thins the ice shelves, which normally slow down the glaciers behind them. As the shelves weaken, the glaciers speed up, sending more ice into the ocean.
When ice begins to float, it moves faster and may break apart or melt. This is a concern for West Antarctica, where much of the ice sits on bedrock below sea level, making it vulnerable to ocean warming. Greenland’s glaciers are also significant, with some outlet glaciers moving up to 15 meters per day.
Glaciers are advancing nearly 50 feet each day, making them some of the fastest ice flows on the planet. This acceleration indicates how much land-based ice is entering the ocean, signaling potential future impacts. Increased flow means greater ice loss, leading to rising sea levels that affect coastlines globally.
Greenland and Antarctica hold enough frozen water to raise sea levels by several feet if melted, posing a serious threat to island nations as their land disappears beneath rising waters.
Hosea 4:1 The LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
