The location of the Ark of the Covenant, which holds the Ten Commandments, has long been a mystery, but archaeologists may be closer to finding it.
The Bible describes the Ark of the Covenant as built by the Israelites after their escape from Egypt in the 13th century BC, with the Ten Commandments inside.
It was kept in the Holy of Holies in Jerusalem’s ancient temple until it vanished during the Babylonian conquest in 586 BC. Recently, an archaeologist suggested that the Ark could be hidden in underground areas in the City of David, south of the Temple Mount.
Researchers will use advanced technology to scan underground areas for hidden cavities and buried metals. This approach uses muon detectors, which track subatomic particles produced when cosmic rays interact with Earth’s atmosphere, allowing scientists to identify hidden chambers without excavation.
Recent scans have revealed unknown voids and structures beneath the ancient landscape, supporting the hidden tunnel theory. If this technology is applied beneath the Temple Mount, the team believes they could detect the Ark of the Covenant, which is said to be plated in gold.
However, they do not claim to have found the Ark or to know its exact location. In his documentary, released on April 7, he examines three ancient traditions about the Ark’s fate after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem’s First Temple in 586 BC.
These accounts suggest the Ark was hidden to protect it from invaders, rather than destroyed. He also expressed hope that future technologies could allow his team to explore underground spaces without disturbing sacred ground.
He pointed out advancements in imaging technologies, such as ground-penetrating radar and seismic scanning, that can map hidden structures beneath the Temple Mount. He noted that these tools could help identify concealed spaces in an area where traditional excavation methods are largely prohibited.
However, he emphasized that this remains a long-term possibility rather than an active project. In a recent interview, he expressed excitement about future developments while noting significant religious, political, and logistical barriers.
While interest in advanced scanning methods is growing, his main focus remains on ancient texts and historical traditions rather than excavation efforts. A popular theory posits that the Ark is hidden beneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, based on early Jewish sources.
The Temple Mount, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, is the holiest site in Judaism and significant in biblical history. This 36-acre compound was home to Solomon’s Temple and the rebuilt Second Temple, serving as the spiritual center of Israelite worship. Tradition holds that priests hid sacred items in underground chambers beneath the complex before the Babylonian siege.
The theory of hidden chambers beneath the Temple Mount has sparked centuries of speculation and remains a topic of debate among researchers. One account suggests that the prophet Jeremiah concealed the Ark between two mountains, making him a central figure in stories about its disappearance.
The exact location mentioned in the texts is unclear. Some scholars believe it could be a wilderness area near Jerusalem or a remote mountain region. According to an ancient tradition, Jeremiah is said to have taken the Ark and other sacred objects to a cave or tomb on Mount Nebo, traditionally linked to Moses’s death.
Some interpretations suggest the Ark may have been hidden near Moses’ burial site, but later traditions complicate efforts to pinpoint its exact location. All three proposed locations share key similarities: they place Jeremiah at the forefront of efforts to protect the Ark, occur shortly before Jerusalem’s fall, and imply that the relic was intentionally concealed.
