China and Russia make military maneuvers after Trump’s nuclear threat

In response to Trump’s deployment of submarines near Russia, Putin has started military exercises with China, showcasing their alliance.

China’s Defence Ministry announced that the Joint Sea-2025 drills have begun in the waters near Vladivostok, which is Russia’s largest port on the Pacific Ocean. Four Chinese vessels, including the guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, will participate in these drills, which will take place over three days.

The exercises will include submarine rescue, anti-submarine operations, air defense, anti-missile operations, and maritime combat, followed by naval patrols in the Pacific. Russia and China, who formed a “no-limits” strategic partnership before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, regularly conduct these drills to enhance military coordination and deter adversaries.

The joint naval exercises occurred just a day after Trump moved submarines loaded with nuclear warheads toward Russian waters following his argument with Mr. Medvedev on social media.

On Telegram, an encrypted social media app, the deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security Council stated that Russia could activate the “Dead Hand” program. This doomsday protocol allows for an automatic nuclear counterstrike against major U.S. cities, even if Moscow and President Vladimir Putin are incapacitated or destroyed.

His post stated: “Regarding the discussions about the ‘dead economies’ of India and Russia, as well as the idea of ‘entering dangerous territory’ perhaps he should think back to his favorite movies about ‘the walking dead’ and also consider how dangerous the fictional ‘Dead Hand’ concept, which doesn’t exist in reality, could be.”

He should remember two key points: 1) Russia is not Israel or Iran, and 2) every new ultimatum increases the risk of war, both between Russia and Ukraine and within his own country. 

In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump said, “Following the provocative statements from former President Dmitry Medvedev, now the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions.”

Words hold great power and can lead to unintended consequences. “A threat has been made, so we must be cautious and protect our people. He is entering dangerous territory!” Mr. Trump said, “The submarines are getting closer to Russia. We always want to be prepared.”

I want to ensure his words are merely words. While Russia and China claim their military cooperation does not target any third country, Japan opposes their joint drills, citing strong concerns about the strategic coordination between Beijing and Moscow threatening its national security.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for Beijing’s defense ministry criticized US Air Force drills with Japan and others in the western Pacific. “The US is recklessly flexing its military power in the Asia-Pacific, using these drills to intimidate other countries and undermine regional peace and stability.”

China and Russia have conducted military exercises together for over 20 years, starting their ‘Joint Sea’ exercises in 2012. Their cooperation has intensified, with Putin and Xi meeting over 40 times in the past decade.

Recently, the White House, Pentagon, and Downing Street avoided commenting on rising tensions tied to President Trump’s August 8 ceasefire deadline for Putin regarding Ukraine.

The US President has promised “devastating” sanctions on Russia and its close trading partners if his demands are unmet. The US Navy has 71 nuclear-powered submarines, capable of traveling thousands of miles without resurfacing, though their locations remain unknown.

The Russian Navy has fewer than 30 nuclear-powered submarines. Experts believe Mr. Trump likely deployed two Ohio-class submarines, each equipped with up to 20 Trident II D5 missiles, capable of delivering multiple thermonuclear warheads over a range of 7,000 miles.
