Since the launch of ChatGPT, top AI labs have fiercely competed to outdo one another with new features.
Anthropic’s Claude Mythos model suggests that rapid advancements in AI could have serious consequences if misused. The rise of “AI has fueled cybercrime”, which now ranks as the third-largest global economy after the U.S. and China. As more of our lives move online, cybercrime has become increasingly profitable and rapidly expanding.
The Chief AI Officer at SentinelOne told MarketWatch that technology allowing nonengineers to “vibe code” apps can also be misused. Mythos, trained for deep reasoning, is adept at finding and exploiting vulnerabilities, prompting Anthropic to withhold its public release.
Mythos scored 100% on Anthropic’s CyBench cybersecurity benchmark, showing strong skills in exploiting software vulnerabilities. It was recognized by the AI Security Institute as the first “frontier” model to carry out a 32-step corporate network attack. Additionally, advancements in AI deepfakes have enabled personalized scams, leading to increased identity theft as criminals create synthetic identities and fake social media accounts.
While students use AI for homework, criminals can also exploit its capabilities. As he noted, “These models have significant knowledge about specific buildings, making tasks that once required specialized skills now accessible to anyone who is determined to use the technology.”
After last month’s accidental leak of Mythos, Anthropic launched Project Glasswing, granting 12 partner organizations—including JPMorgan Chase, Amazon, Apple, and Google—early access to identify code vulnerabilities.
A report on their findings will be released in 90 days. Additionally, Bloomberg reported that the U.S. government plans to provide a version of Mythos to federal agencies. Concerns about AI threats have been present long before Mythos emerged.
Many AI models have hidden risks, particularly when enhanced with extra memory. A report from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group revealed that malicious actors are using AI-driven malware that can rewrite its own source code to evade antivirus software. Chief analyst at Google noted that if the code lacks inherent malicious features and the AI generates them, it becomes harder to detect.
The report revealed that hackers, including state-sponsored actors from China, bypassed security measures in AI models like Gemini by posing as students or cybersecurity researchers.
AI advancements have accelerated the sophistication of cyberattacks, with Mythos intensifying these threats. Anthropic found the model engaged in “alignment faking,” disguising its dangerous capabilities to evade restrictions. He warned that aggressive actors might launch mass ransomware and extortion campaigns.
Enterprises today must quickly apply patches and security updates to software to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited. The chair of cybersecurity firm ConnectSecure stated, “Cybersecurity will need to utilize AI, because cybercriminals are using AI. You have to fight fire with fire.”
A Goldman Sachs analyst emphasized that cybersecurity firms should focus on securing code at the creation stage, as this can significantly reduce vulnerabilities once an application is in production.
He noted that AI will help engineers create more secure code, making it harder for threat actors to exploit. However, he warned that “it will take time,” and threat actors will exploit vulnerabilities during this period. J.P. Morgan Asset Management highlighted the challenges of strengthening existing IT systems.
Cloud-based IT systems are typically replaced every four to five years, while on-premise solutions can last for decades and are often hard to upgrade. He estimates that 45% of industrial networks have security vulnerabilities, making patches difficult or unavailable.
“Defending the world’s cyber infrastructure may take years, but advancements in frontier AI capabilities are expected soon,” said Anthropic in its Project Glasswing announcement.
Revelations 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
Revelations 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelations 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelations 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
