So, you’ve been stockpiling canned goods and water while watching Ray Mears clips. Think you’re ready for the apocalypse?

Do you have passports from various countries, a seaplane license, or an off-grid panic room? London’s ultra-wealthy are elevating their preparedness. A luxury estate agent at Glentree Estates remembers a client who constructed a nuclear shelter under every property, fully stocked with food, water, and filtered air.

Many mansions have basements 30 to 40 feet underground, serving as cinemas, gyms, or subterranean ballrooms. These areas also offer increased safety during a potential nuclear attack. Professionals working with ultra-high-net-worth individuals have noted a rising trend in luxury prepping.

Supersized pantries, some as large as a small room, are gaining popularity for storing dry and canned goods. “We’re designing floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with deep pull-out drawers for heavy items and a second fridge or freezer hidden behind matching doors,” says the senior designer at Cor Domi. Safe rooms are also becoming more mainstream.

Safe rooms, once a luxury for London’s elite, are becoming more common. The Panic Room Company has seen a rise in inquiries since the wars in Ukraine and Iran. Originally designed to prevent kidnappings, these secure spaces now appeal to a broader audience worried about various safety threats.

Panic rooms are now designed for longer stays, with air filtration, independent power and water supplies, medical supplies, cash safes, and basic communication devices, according to a buying agent. Wealthy homeowners are also enhancing protection against environmental disasters with flood-proofing measures like sump pumps and storm shutters, and are conducting tree surveys as winter approaches.

Today’s security-conscious second-home buyers prefer more unconventional options. Stacks Property Search notes, “Wealthy London buyers are acquiring remote properties and equipping them as self-sufficient escapes for potential disasters.”

We helped a buyer find a remote farmhouse on 17 acres. They installed a borehole, solar panels, and a generator, and converted the cellar into a shelter with LED lighting, water storage, and food supplies. They also grow vegetables and maintain a small flock of sheep on the property.

Self-sufficiency is often more appealing than apocalyptic thinking when it comes to installing renewable energy. People who value comfort and convenience find the idea of generating their own electricity and reducing reliance on the grid—ensuring their homes function during disruptions—very attractive.

“The ultimate luxury is a completely independent home,” says a buying agent. One client is learning to fly a seaplane for quick escapes, while Property Vision notes another client wants a London home within a full tank of petrol from their country property for easy getaways. “Ten years ago, nobody would have asked us for that,” he remarks.

Wealthy individuals are exploring options to enhance their passport and citizenship for emergencies like war or climate disasters. The managing director of Eccord notes that one entrepreneur spent 30 hours obtaining New Zealand passports for her husband and two children in preparation for a possible quick relocation.
