The Pentagon is taking proactive steps to prepare for a long-term power outage.

A new requirement under development mandates that each major military base in the contiguous U.S. be self-sufficient for at least 90 days if a war disrupts the power grid and supply chains, according to Fox News Digital, which cites internal Pentagon documents.

The Pentagon has not identified its primary adversary, but in 2024, U.S. agencies reported that state-backed Chinese hackers breached American energy, water, and communications networks, posing a potential threat during future conflicts. The FORTRESS program aims to ensure independence in managing water, fuel, communications, and power resources.

British households are receiving warnings from the U.K. government’s Be Ready campaign, launched on October 22, urging families to keep enough water, non-perishable food, and cash to survive for three days if essential services fail.

Tech leaders have shared their disaster preparedness strategies. In a 2016 profile, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, listed his readiness kit, which includes firearms, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, Israeli Defense Forces gas masks, and a Big Sur retreat.

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, noted that over half of Silicon Valley billionaires invest in “apocalypse insurance,” often securing retreats in the U.S. or abroad for peace of mind.

Many ultra-wealthy individuals are discreetly preparing for potential doomsday scenarios. Brian Daniel, founder of The Celebrity Personal Assistant Network, noted that his clients have become increasingly safety-conscious, especially over the past five years.

“At the very least, my clients are installing backup power systems and stocking up on supplies that could last for months,” he said. Wealthy individuals are diversifying their investments by purchasing multiple properties, both domestically and internationally, often outside major cities. Some are also investing in luxury underground bunkers.

In Palm Beach, Florida, a section of South Ocean Boulevard near Mar-a-Lago was closed earlier this year because of security concerns related to the conflict in Iran, affecting Billionaires’ Beach. Local agents noted that buyers considered this closure a selling point. Clients worth over $100 million typically employ full-time security staff.

People are seeking peace of mind and are willing to invest to achieve it. Jessica Julian, a luxury real estate agent in Palm Beach, noted that what was once a temporary inconvenience has become essential for business.

Philip Farina, chief advisor at Risky Business, observed increased client inquiries due to government preparedness campaigns. During the pandemic, some clients moved from areas with strict COVID-19 rules to their second homes and remote “escape homes.”

“Many clients are looking for a comprehensive package that includes real estate, self-sufficient equipment, food stockpiles, emergency Go-Bags, and plans,” said Samuel Strauch, principal at Metrik Real Estate.

In Miami, buyers are especially concerned about the power grid because of hurricanes and often ask about property elevation and generators. “Impact-resistant glass and windproof construction are standard now,” Strauch added. “Serious buyers want their contingency plans ready from the start.”
