As co-owner of DEFCON Underground, a U.S. manufacturer of bomb shelters, he caters to a mainstream market seeking protection from worst-case scenarios.

The industry offers various shelter designs and locations, from backyard bunkers in the Midwest to subterranean hideouts in Northern Europe and the Middle East. Developers report booming business as rising geopolitical tensions and technological changes drive a significant increase in interest.

“I haven’t given a specific figure, but the rise in inquiries and website traffic is evident,” said the CEO of Bunker Building Consulting LLC in Massachusetts. “More people are asking serious questions and moving quickly from curiosity to real planning. What was once a fringe topic has become mainstream among those who can act on it.”

People engaged in disaster preparedness have various motivations, from a desire for peace of mind to fears of existential threats. They worry about grid failures, cyberattacks, artificial intelligence, political instability, pandemics, and natural disasters. Many feel the world is becoming more unpredictable and divided, raising concerns about potential civil unrest.

“The risks from powerful, uncontrolled AIs are significant,” says the head of research at CivAI, an AI safety nonprofit. In light of concerns about rogue AIs, bunker service businesses report rising demand for shelters designed to withstand threats like nuclear war, economic collapse, and natural disasters.

An Indiana accommodation can house 80 people and is designed to withstand nuclear events; it was built during the Cold War. It can endure a 20-megaton blast and costs $50,000 per space, with discounts for individuals with valuable skills. The website features Biblical end-times prophecies, including the phrase, “It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark!”

Many believe that rising global political tensions and concerns about AI put us on the brink of World War III. Despite the high costs, the industry is not exclusively targeting the wealthy.

“We cater to a diverse clientele and do not focus solely on providing bunkers for the elite,” he said. “While some may seek that, it’s not our primary aim.”

On its website, SAFE showcases various articles about its “billionaire bunkers,” including a special called “Protecting the Super Rich” and a Realtor.com piece on its “$300 Million Members-Only Luxury Doomsday Bunker.”

“We do not sell pre-manufactured steel shelters delivered by truck,” he explained. “Our clients are typically wealthy individuals or corporations, often working through their attorneys.” The custom bunkers feature electromagnetic pulse (EMP) protection, CBRN air filtration, independent energy systems, medical suites, and command centers.

These properties boast high ceilings, spacious layouts, full kitchens, gyms, pools, wellness facilities, and areas for children and pets, all designed for the discerning doomsday prepper.

High-net-worth clients are particularly drawn to the “Generational Home,” which features a luxury property above a ballistic- and electromagnetic weapon-proof bunker with CBRN filtration.

The facility has food and water reserves, an armory, a communications room, a decontamination room, and living quarters. Survival Condo, a bunker in Kansas, can sustain 75 people for years. The owner bought a decommissioned missile silo in 2008 for $300,000 and converted it into a 15-story, 20,000-square-foot bunker.

Survival is a fundamental imperative for all species. Yet, alongside waning faith in humanity and the future, the bunker industry highlights a divided quest for safety, primarily accessible to those who can afford it.

This raises the question: “In your lifetime, has the world become a better place or a worse place?”

It has been 2000 years since Jesus died and was resurrected, and for the first time in history, we can say that all the signs are present.

Those who take the signs seriously and watch and prepare for Jesus’ return have eternal life to look forward to.
