Egyptian archaeologists have found evidence that could help locate a long-lost ancient city on a military route linked to the biblical Exodus.
Archaeologists have discovered a stone beam inscribed with the name of an Egyptian pharaoh, whom many scholars believe is associated with the biblical story of Moses.
The ancient beam, or lintel, was broken into two fragments and inscribed on three sides with hieroglyphics containing the pharaoh’s titles.
On August 15, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced a discovery at Tell Abu Seifi, an ancient fortified site near the Sinai Peninsula, which may be the lost city of Mesen.
The site was situated along the Horus Military Road, which connected Egypt to Sinai and Canaan. Scholars associate this road with the “way of the land of the Philistines” in the Book of Exodus.
Exodus 13:17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:
The Israelites, led by Moses, avoided the shorter route through Philistia while fleeing Egypt and opted for a longer journey to Canaan.
Officials announced that archaeologists discovered a large sandstone lintel, or stone beam, inscribed with the titles of Ramesses II, the pharaoh commonly associated with Moses.
Ramesses II, born circa 1303 B.C., stands as one of the most powerful rulers of the New Kingdom. His death around 1213 B.C. confirms that the newly uncovered beam is over 3,000 years old.
The lintel features an inscription mentioning the restoration of a statue of Horus, referred to as “Lord of the City of Mesen.”
Officials assert that the inscription conclusively identifies the site of Mesen mentioned in New Kingdom texts.
Archaeologists have successfully unearthed the remains of a fortified temple complex, featuring a robust mudbrick enclosure wall, impressive gates, storage rooms, and two ancient stone roads that lead directly into the temple.
The new evidence definitively establishes a strong archaeological and historical connection between the site and the ancient Egyptian city of Mesen.
The site continued to evolve long after the temple’s construction, with sections converted into a Roman military barracks during the third century A.D. Archaeologists also uncovered fragments of falcon statues and other sculptures.
In a definitive statement, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities emphasized that these findings are a crucial addition to the ministry’s mission to uncover the rich history of archaeological sites in North Sinai and the Qantara region.
The discoveries at the site powerfully illustrate the critical strategic and cultural role this region has played in defending Egypt’s eastern borders throughout history.
This latest archaeological find is one of several remarkable discoveries in Egypt this year, all of which draw intriguing connections to Ramesses II and the biblical world, reinforcing the area’s rich historical narrative.
