A New Era in China: When One Man Controls the Entire Army

China’s leadership has undergone another significant restructuring, with the country’s military command being adjusted at the highest levels.

The action is viewed as one of the most significant power consolidations under President Xi Jinping in over a decade. Chinese President Xi Jinping has gained full control of the country’s armed forces after accusing a senior general of serious violations of discipline and the law.

Zhang Youxia, the senior vice chair of the Central Military Commission and a long-time confidant of Xi, was removed from his position on Saturday, marking the most severe step yet in an ongoing military purge.“This action is unprecedented in the history of the Chinese military and signifies the complete destruction of the high command,” said a former CIA official.

Analysts believe that the removal of Zhang Youxia, who is described as a childhood friend of the president, indicates that no one is safe from scrutiny. “The ousting of even a childhood friend like Zhang Youxia demonstrates that there are now no limits to Xi’s determination to combat corruption.”

After coming to power in 2012, Xi prioritized combating alleged corruption within the armed forces, particularly focusing on the senior ranks of the People’s Liberation Army in 2023.

China’s defense ministry has confirmed that Liu Zhenli, a member of the Central Military Commission, is currently under investigation. Details regarding the investigation have not been disclosed.

An editorial in the PLA’s official newspaper firmly accused the two generals of significantly exacerbating political issues and corruption that undermine the party’s absolute control over the military and jeopardize the very foundation of its rule.

Some commentators assert that the purge may undermine China’s readiness for a potential move on Taiwan, while others contend that it reinforces Xi’s hold on power. It’s important to recognize that “the military is the only organization in China with a history of defying party leaders.”

A prominent Chinese military expert asserts that ensuring unwavering loyalty within the armed forces is vital for Xi Jinping’s enduring rule. The Central Military Commission has reached a historic low in size, with only Zhang Shengmin, the military’s anti-corruption chief, remaining alongside Xi.

The Communist Party took decisive action by expelling former vice chair He Weidong in October 2024 and dismissing two former defense ministers due to corruption allegations. This latest purge clearly demonstrates Xi’s unwavering commitment to eliminating potential rivals as he prepares for future leadership battles.
