China hiding hundreds of intercontinental missiles in silo fields

China has likely deployed over 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles in its three newest silo fields and shows little interest in arms control talks, according to a draft Pentagon report highlighting Beijing’s military ambitions.

China is rapidly modernizing its weapons stockpile, more so than any other nuclear-armed nation. Beijing claims that reports of this buildup are attempts to deceive the international community.

Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested he might create a denuclearization plan with China and Russia. However, a draft Pentagon report noted that Beijing shows no interest in these discussions, stating, “We continue to see no appetite from Beijing for such measures or arms control.”

The report indicated that China has likely deployed over 100 solid-fueled DF-31 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in silo fields near its border with Mongolia, marking the latest addition to its silo sites. The Pentagon had previously acknowledged these fields but did not specify the number of missiles present.

The draft Pentagon report did not specify targets for the newly deployed missiles. U.S. officials indicated that the report may change before it is submitted to lawmakers. It estimates China’s nuclear warhead stockpile to be in the low 600s in 2024, reflecting a slower production rate than in previous years.

The report noted that China’s nuclear expansion is ongoing, with projections of over 1,000 warheads by 2030. China maintains a “nuclear strategy of self-defense” and a no-first-use policy. Former President Trump has suggested the U.S. resume nuclear weapons testing, though the specifics remain unclear.

The extensive Pentagon report outlined China’s military expansion and stated that “China anticipates being capable of fighting and winning a war over Taiwan by the end of 2027.”

China considers democratically governed Taiwan to be part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to “reunify” with the island. According to reports, Beijing is developing military strategies that could involve taking Taiwan by “brute force.” One potential option might include military strikes conducted between 1,500 and 2,000 nautical miles from China’s shores.

“These strikes could significantly challenge and disrupt US presence in conflicts within the Asia-Pacific region,” the report stated. This comes just months before the expiration of the 2010 New START treaty, the last US-Russia nuclear arms control agreement, which limits each side to 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads on 700 delivery systems.

Many experts are concerned that the expiration of the pact could trigger a three-way nuclear arms race. “The presence of more nuclear weapons and a lack of diplomacy will not make anyone safer — neither China, Russia, nor the United States,” stated the executive director of the Arms Control Association advocacy group.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s crackdown on corruption targets the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). While this may temporarily affect nuclear readiness, it is expected to lead to long-term improvements in the military.

Revenues at China’s major military firms fell last year due to corruption purges that hindered arms contracts. Despite rising defense budgets over the past three decades and growing tensions with the United States regarding Taiwan and the South China Sea, China’s weapons revenue declined.

In the past 18 months, at least 26 high-ranking current and former managers in state-owned arms companies have been investigated or removed from their positions, according to a Pentagon report.

The investigations, which initially focused on procurement in the rocket and missile sector in 2023, have now expanded to encompass most of China’s defense industry, including its nuclear and shipbuilding sectors.
