Oceans Are Rising at a Speed not seen in 4,000 Years

A study in Nature by Rutgers University researchers shows that global sea levels are rising faster now than at any time in the past 4,000 years.

Scientists have studied ancient coral reefs and sediment cores to reconstruct sea-level patterns. They found a significant rise in sea levels since the industrial era, driven by human-induced warming and melting polar ice, resulting in unprecedented ocean conditions.

Researchers at Rutgers University analyzed geological records to reconstruct sea-level patterns over the past 4,000 years. Their findings show that today’s rise—about 4 millimeters per year—is unprecedented for this period.

Climate fluctuations have always occurred, but the rapid changes we see today are largely unprecedented and driven by industrial greenhouse gas emissions since the late 19th century. To study sea level history, scientists analyzed coral reefs, mangroves, and coastal sediments from 50 global sites.

Natural archives show that sea levels have changed over thousands of years. This study links modern sea-level rise to human-induced climate change, driven by increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, which causes ocean water to expand and ice from Greenland and Antarctica to melt.

Greenland and West Antarctica’s ice sheets are melting faster than ever recorded. Satellite data shows they are losing hundreds of billions of tons of ice each year, contributing to rising global sea levels.

As ocean water warms, it expands, contributing to rising sea levels. Even small temperature increases can cause notable swelling, raising global sea levels. This issue is not just a future concern; it is already impacting coastal communities.

Cities like Miami, New York, Jakarta, and Bangkok are experiencing more frequent flooding, higher storm surges, and saltwater intrusion. While global sea levels are rising, local impacts vary due to land movement, ocean currents, and regional temperatures.

Some areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast, Southeast Asia, and the western Pacific are experiencing sea-level rise much faster than the global average. Meanwhile, regions in Scandinavia and Canada are slightly rising due to land rebound from melting ice. These variations complicate predictions and highlight the need for localized adaptation strategies.

Before the 19th century, global sea levels fluctuated by only a few inches over centuries, allowing coastal civilizations to thrive. A Rutgers study reveals a dramatic shift beginning around 1880, driven by the increase in fossil fuel use.

This period marks the start of the “modern acceleration,” a rapid departure from natural balance. Even if greenhouse gas emissions stopped today, sea levels would still rise for centuries. A Rutgers team warns that this rise is now accelerating beyond historical norms.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
