99% of coral reefs could disappear in alarming new study

Scientists have warned that global warming is causing significant die-offs of warm-water coral reefs.

According to a landmark report, rising temperatures are pushing several of Earth’s systems dangerously close to thresholds beyond which their decline accelerates, leading to increasingly irreversible global impacts.

The paper, authored by over 160 scientists from 23 countries at the University of Exeter, found that warm-water coral reefs sustain nearly a billion people and a quarter of all marine life.

The scientists established a threshold of 1.2°C warming above pre-industrial levels; however, the world has now reached 1.4°C, indicating that the impacts of passing these tipping points are already underway.

Over the past two years, more than 80% of the world’s reefs have experienced the worst bleaching event on record, where corals lose their color and turn white due to stress, primarily caused by elevated ocean temperatures.

This underscores a critical point: unless the planet cools, we will lose these marine ecosystems globally. Scientists stress that while some small refuges may survive, we must take steps to protect them.

The world is rapidly approaching catastrophic tipping points in ice melt, Amazon rainforest dieback, and essential ocean currents as it approaches the critical milestone of 1.5°C of warming above pre-industrial levels.

Last year, global temperatures averaged 1.5°C, with long-term trends indicating a warming of 1.4°C. This makes it nearly inevitable that the world will exceed this critical threshold within this decade.

As the planet warms, we approach critical tipping points that could accelerate the melting of ice sheets in regions such as Greenland and West Antarctica. This could lead to their collapse and result in a dramatic rise in sea levels, potentially by several meters, according to the report.

Researchers have discovered that the Amazon rainforest may be on the verge of reaching a tipping point before global temperatures increase by 2 degrees Celsius. This situation has been exacerbated by two years of severe drought, along with climate change and deforestation.

Recent modeling indicates that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)—a system of ocean currents transporting heat from the tropics to the North Atlantic—faces collapse sooner than previously expected.

They explained that winter sea ice could blanket the North Sea, with temperatures possibly dropping to minus 30°C in Edinburgh, while London might endure three months of freezing weather each year, contrasting with intense heatwaves during summer.

The tipping points will have catastrophic consequences for billions of people worldwide who depend on their ecosystems for food and livelihoods. They will cause significant harm to biodiversity, reduce agricultural yields in many regions, and result in enormous costs to local and national economies.
