China’s J-20 Mighty Dragon Stealth Fighter

China will display its J-20 stealth fighter at an air show this month for the first time, marking a significant change in its secretive program.

The recent transparency around the J-20 aircraft shows its transition from a rare prototype to a key asset in the Chinese air force, with hundreds in operation. This change is influenced by its deployment near foreign borders, where adversaries have detected it, revealing its stealth capabilities.

China is set to unveil its Chengdu J-20 fighter jet at a public air show, demonstrating its growing confidence in the aircraft nearly 15 years after its first public flight announcement.

The twin-engine stealth fighter had its initial test flight in January 2011 at the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation (CAC) aerodrome, co-located with Aircraft Plant No. 132, where it is now produced in series.

China’s J-20 stealth fighter jet will be showcased on the ground for the first time this month during the PLAAF’s annual aviation day open house in Changchun, Jilin Province, as announced by the Chinese Ministry of Defense on August 11.

Aircraft static displays and demonstration flights will take place from September 19 to 23. It’s unclear why the J-20, previously seen during Air Show China in Zhuhai, is now being shown more openly.

The two-seat J-20S was displayed as a mock-up at the 2024 Zhuhai expo. Revealing some models doesn’t compromise their detailed design, as many J-20s have been built. Unlike the US F-117As, the J-20 is no longer a unique aircraft for special missions.

By the end of last year, at least 200 aircraft were in service, with over 400 expected by 2030. They are deployed in remote areas, including near the India border, and have been frequently detected by both ground and airborne radars, revealing much about their radar cross-section (RCS) and characteristics.

A key question about the J-20 is the purpose of the two-seat J-20S. The U.S. has never created a two-seat version of the F-22A or F-35. Was the J-20S designed for training, or is there an operational need for it?

At the 2024 Zhuhai Expo, a military commentator and a retired PLA officer explained that the J-20S would operate similarly to the Indian Air Force’s twin-seat Sukhoi Su-30MKI, featuring a pilot in the front and a weapons operator in the rear. This setup enhances task focus, alongside notable changes to the J-20’s engine.

The aircraft originally used two Russian-made Salyut AL-31F jet engines acquired during China’s purchase of the Sukhoi Su-27. It then transitioned to the Liming WS-10 engine for the J-11, a reverse-engineered version of the Su-27. Currently, the more advanced WS-10C is being used to replace the AL-31F engines across most of the PLAAF fleet.

Currently, the J-20 serves as the primary fighter for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). In the future, it is expected to be supported by the Shenyang J-35A, similar to how the F-35 operates as the “lower tier” aircraft for the United States Air Force (USAF) alongside the F-22.
