Arctic Permafrost Preserved an Old ‘Zombie’ Virus, Now Scientists Have Revived it

In the Northern Hemisphere, from Alaska to Canada to Siberia, tiny microbes have been trapped in permafrost for millions of years.

Permafrost acts as a giant freezer, trapping carbon, toxic mercury, and hazardous chemicals that could pose a threat to humanity. As global warming thaws this permafrost, dormant microbes may awaken, potentially causing serious consequences for nearby areas, according to a study by French scientists published on bioRxiv.

Permafrost, covering one-fifth of the Arctic ice, acts as a time capsule, preserving the mummified remains of animals and possibly humans. It contains microbes that could pose severe infection risks, and according to NASA, it holds twice the carbon found in Earth’s atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide, are major concerns. Dormant soil microbes can become active and release these gases by feeding on trapped organic matter, thereby exacerbating global warming and posing a threat to human health. Researchers warn that if the climate crisis frees these microbes from frozen areas, the results could be catastrophic.

Arctic microbes may release viruses that pose a danger to humans. A team from the French National Center for Scientific Research, led by microbiologist Jean-Michel Claverie, drilled into Siberian permafrost and discovered thirteen previously unknown viruses, including the “zombie virus,” Pandoravirus yedoma, which is approximately 48,500 years old.

If ancient viruses were released from their frozen state, they could spread globally and multiply. The researchers expressed concern that ancient, unknown viruses causing diseases in plants, animals, or humans could re-emerge as permafrost thaws, potentially leading to severe consequences.

The oldest virus discovered was buried under a lake, with others found in the mummies of a Siberian wolf and a woolly mammoth. Claverie told CNN that the real danger lies in unknown viruses. The human immune system acts like a fortress, creating defenses based on its environment.

Many microbes inhabit our environment, and our bodies have evolved to adapt to them. In contrast, microbes in permafrost have been inactive for 50,000 years, leaving us vulnerable to potential viruses if they are released. This is a genuine threat that we need to prepare for.
