Scientists warned on Wednesday that abrupt, potentially irreversible changes in Antarctica due to climate change could raise global sea levels by meters, resulting in catastrophic consequences for future generations.
A review conducted by a group of leading experts has found that the region is experiencing rapid changes that are both a cause and a consequence of global warming. This information is detailed in a study published in *Nature*, a respected international scientific journal.
The study’s authors stress that limiting CO2 emissions is vital to prevent global warming from surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is necessary to address the significant changes occurring in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The Australian National University, noted that Antarctica is displaying alarming signs of rapid changes in its ice, ocean, and ecosystems.
Some of these sudden changes are difficult to reverse. Shifts in Antarctica’s climate system reinforce each other, accelerating global warming. The study examined evidence of “regime shifts” in sea ice, ocean currents, the ice sheet and ice shelves, and marine life.
It also examined how they interact. Floating sea ice does not significantly add to sea level when it melts, but its retreat does replace white surfaces that reflect almost all of the sun’s energy into space with deep blue water, which absorbs the same amount instead. Oceans soak up ninety percent of the heat generated by manmade global warming.
Antarctic sea ice cover, which initially increased for 35 years, has sharply declined in the last decade. Since 2014, it has retreated an average of 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) from the shoreline, at a rate nearly three times faster than the decline of Arctic sea ice over nearly 50 years.
By July 2025, daily sea ice extent in both hemispheres reached its third-lowest level in 47 years, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Between 2003 and 2019,
Antarctica and Greenland lost thousands of gigatons of ice, contributing to over half an inch of global sea level rise. Scientists warned last September that the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica would deteriorate more rapidly, leading to increased melting and rising sea levels.
Research by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, comprising over 100 scientists, found that water flowing into the sea from the Thwaites Glacier and nearby glaciers has doubled since the 1990s.
A study published in *Nature* highlights “overwhelming evidence of a regime shift in sea ice,” suggesting that Antarctica could be ice-free in summer sooner than the Arctic if current trends continue.
Experts warn that accelerated warming could drive some marine species to extinction. Over the past two years, many emperor penguin chicks have died at breeding sites, drowning or freezing when sea ice melted early beneath them.
In 2023, research showed that all but one of the five monitored sites in the Bellingshausen Sea region experienced a complete loss of chicks.
Ice sheets and their connected ice shelves are located on or supported by land, unlike sea ice. To completely melt the Antarctic ice sheet, global temperatures would need to rise by 5 degrees Celsius, potentially raising sea levels by about 58 meters (nearly 200 feet).
Currently, global warming has reached 1.3 degrees Celsius, nearing a threshold that could cause at least a 3-meter rise in sea levels, threatening coastal areas inhabited by hundreds of millions of people.
“The collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is a major global tipping point,” said Abram. “Evidence shows this could occur with global warming below 2°C.” Additionally, the Antarctic Overturning Circulation, which distributes heat and nutrients, could also be at risk.
A significant slowdown of ocean currents has already started. Evidence from the interglacial period 125,000 years ago suggests that similar conditions today could lead to an abrupt stagnation. This could result in intensified global warming and a decreased ability of the oceans to absorb CO2.
